@stux Also the inch, and from that all imperial distance units, is defined as precisely 2.54mm and has been so since the 1950s.But the inertia of the vast stock if construction / manufacturing / engineering systems built around imperial standard sized components and machines makes it unlikely they will ever swap those labels to any significant degree.

@FSonder I reckon it autodials 999, and then you have audio response options: Press 1 for Police, 2 for an ambulance, 3 for fire or Coastguard.

@piglet If the entire fleet of RAF A300M Atlas ( 14 ) were used to airdrop two full cargo loads per day, it would take them over 200 days to deliver the 6000 truck loads of aid waiting at the border that the Israelis could just let in. It’s not even optics, it’s an utterly malicious distraction.

@futurebird @michael_w_busch This comment of his says everything you need to know about his relationship with how numbers actually work. “We're going to get the drug prices down ... 1000%, 600%, 500%, 1500%, numbers that are not even thought to be achievable" How this man ever ran a business is beyond me.

@stux @ente This is hilarious. I fed it a fairly recent photo of me and got this list of junk they reckon I might be interested in. There are at least three things listed there that I would actively support getting banned. Could this indicate they aren’t tracking me very well? Or maybe I don’t know myself that well because, to be fair, I’m having a hard time _not_ looking up those Meyer-Optik Görlitz lenses.

@argv_minus_one @Gammitin I don’t think I got my hands on multi socket SMP motherboards until ‘97 or ‘98. I’m pretty sure that the first SMP motherboards only came out in 1994 so a quad CPU machine would have been real bleeding edge x86 at that time. Even so a price tag over $600k for an x86 box is quite astonishing.

@foone Reminds me of the scroll effect on the terminals we used to access VAX 11/780 back in the 1980s. That was a very cool effect. Pure text terminals though.

@Nonilex @mastodonmigration You’re right and I agree. But, for certain values of ‘no atmosphere’ some sound transmission is possible. If you find yourself in the line of fire from a thruster, a rocket exhaust plume, or dare I say it an explosion, you could actually get sound. See this RocketLab 2nd stage ignition sequence video _with sound_ https://www.reddit.com/r/space/s/u32HTQseY8If I recall correctly that was taken with a fairly stock GoPro action camera, which had a microphone.
