       Mother’s Day Card Update: mailed Wednesday of last week from Conover. Paid $9.35 for Priority Mail to Albemarle. Should have arrived Friday or Saturday. As of this morning it’s STILL sitting in Charlotte. And people doubt our infrastructure has crumbled.

       I retired young (54), not early though, to escape a toxic, authoritarian, incompetently run academic environment. How do I explain to an octogenarian relative who never had a career that these days retirement doesn’t mean what it did in post WW2 America and that I can still work for compensation in my professional society and can’t always be at one’s beck and call despite being “retired?” All my attempts have failed.
