@alexbuzzbee Well if the only thing you know is Twitter and you now got a semi-official solution for having longer posts, it might make the appearance of an attractive service to some.

@slightlyflightyone The German language is so fucked in that regard. We call them "Arbeitgeber", literally work givers. And workers in that relation "Arbeitnehmer", meaning work takers.

Please stop trying to build "no fuck ups allowed" online spaces or pretend that that is something even remotely achievable. That doesn't mean you should stop moderating or having rules. But please recognise that we have flaws and exist within a system where we are often facing situations beyond our control.Humans have the capacity for growth and we aren't solely responsible for everything that we do.

DRM doesn't work in the sense that a lot of people think it is supposed to.Just because I can't save a video that plays on Netflix, doesn't mean that DRM "works". The idea is that copying is prohibited, however any obfuscation mechanism that DRM technology employs is reversible. It just needs one person to know how to do the reversing, to liberate whatever it is protecting. After that we're back at just copying.Due to the DMCA, circumventing DRM is considered a crime and a lot of countries have similar legislation. You rarely see this used against consumers however, but instead against companies. When you want to bring a DVD player to the market, you probably want to support it playing DRM protected DVDs too. Now you have to acquire a license for said technology, which will require you to sign a contract with for example the DVD Copy Control Association. And suddenly you have to comply with whatever they are demanding.DRM is a means of control - not protection.

Discrediting a protocol based on infrastructure engineering failings is peak dishonesty. Also calling the Matrix people just a bunch of front-end devs is just not true, but I guess it's an easy answer.

@feld It's required however because of the features people expect from chat platforms these days. You don't happen to have a similar opinions on XMPP and Activitypub? What you call noise is important metadata for federated data syndication and security.

Constant "ironic shitposting" is a means of plausible deniability. It's a way of hiding your true intentions or not having to choose a firm position. An example would be calling people "soy boys".It was originally pushed based on bunk science, that taking in soy based products will feminise you as a man, due to the phytoestrogens that come with soy.It was a way of mocking leftists, which tend to be more likely to be vegetarians/vegans and the perceived feminisation of our generation of men (due to the left).Once proven on a large scale that their scientific claims had no grounds, they move on to claim that it was never about the science in the first place."LOL, imagine mentioning phytoestrogens when I call people soy boys!".When you ever have the misfortune of having to talk with people like that, don't let that irritate you. Pin them down properly and make them defend what they actually said.Chances are they never had to, due to the approach mentioned above.

Fun fact: By licensing your work as Creative Commons, people won't be able to lock it away again using DRM.https://creativecommons.org/faq/#is-creative-commons-involved-in-digital-rights-management-drm

Please stop equating us aces with celibates (or even worse incels)!Asexuality is the lack of sexual attraction - from that does not follow that one doesn't wish to engage in sexual behaviour, or that sex is perceived as something gross.

People keep talking about German efficiency, and I'm just here looking at our effort of building a new airport in our capital for two decades now - what y'all talking about.

When I tell people that I study computer science, almost always I get some concerned answer telling me that it must be a hard field of study, as things are changing a lot in that field. And here I am, reading and quoting papers from several decades ago 😄

People can moderate their own space here, because it's actually their's. That's the entire idea of this whole Fediverse thing. If that bothers you, like what are you even doing here?

@SelfsameSynonym It's actually incredible. Here in Germany we had people argue that nobody knew about Auschwitz after Nazi Germany was defeated. This went so far that even a post-war chancellor made that argument. But thanks to historians we now know that if you weren't a child at the time, you knew. There's definitely some kind of dissonance going on with stuff like this.

When watching videos on YouTube, the fact that auto play is enabled by default on videos that don't belong to a playlist, says everything about the platform that you need to know.
