@grammargirl We went from people visiting three or four websites, reading articles about a topic, and forming an opinion, to asking chatGPT and pressing "I'm feeling lucky". This is why philosophy and Theory of Knowledge education are such important things to learn. Doubt should be trusted.

@brewsterkahle American Puritanist ignorance is spreading. It's a shame that people didn't see the discussion about the BRexit referendum as a serious warning to revise ethics and morality. England is paying the price for people not studying 20th Century history.

@rolle I complained and blogged about the change from conversations to hashtags in 2007, as well as about the emerging cult of personality, the idealising of million follower accounts. I was way ahead, with my criticism. I saw the flaws decades before others.

@rolle One of my other comments is that social media forgot about ROI for users. They focused so much on ROI for corporate and PR interests that they forgot that users need a reason to stick around.

@atomicpoet One of the key flaws of BlueSky is that people follow, without conversing first. It reminds me of Plurk. It's a network where you get your ego stroked by follows, but end up feeling lonely because interactions are rare. I don't want followers, I want conversations.

@rolle Imagine if they were all on substack and each follow meant another series of e-mails. Substack is really noisy, even when you don't visit the site.

@tek "Why are people not in my circles seeing my news""oh I can send encrypted messages; fantastic". ;-)If circles are not safe how would anyone worth their salt in encryption use Twitter for encrypted messages?

@tek It feels as if Twitter by X.Corp is suffering from feature creap. It used to be about short messages. Now it has everything, including the kitchen sink, so it's out of its niche, and in the frying pan of irrelevance.

@tek With the new CEO in six weeks, tons, of adverts, with less content. I was trying to find information about her but so far there's nothing discernable. Her Twitter account doesn't provide much insight.

https://techhub.social/@stux@mstdn.social/110650014205589955 Twitter was a friend of friend network. Friends of friend networks are small and sustainable. When Twitter became a million follower piece of crap in 2008 or so the costs exploded, and so they needed venture capital. They should have stayed small and sustainble, rather than becoming the bloated piecesof crap they became.

The spam bots have now found Threads, as company announces its own ‘rate limits’ https://techcrunch.com/2023/07/17/the-spam-bots-have-now-found-threads-as-company-announces-its-own-rate-limits/ —- it’s all spam. The difference is in who gets paid.

@clive I asked Bard about you (or at least your name: "Clive is not short for anything. It is a standalone name that comes from the Old English word "clif," meaning "cliff." It was originally a surname, but it became a given name in the 19th century. There are some people who believe that Clive is short for "Clifford," but this is not the case. Clifford is a different name with a different meaning. Clifford comes from the Old English words "clif" and "ford," meaning "cliff ford."Clive is a relatively rare name, but it has become more popular in recent years. Some famous people with the name Clive include Clive Owen, Clive Barker, and Clive Davis."

@clive @crutlefish My visceral reaction was to the final cut camera app. I really like Final Cut X and use it professionaly. The issue with FCP X is that with an old device you stop getting new features. With the Final Cut Camera app you need to buy an expensive ipad to play with it. 2000 CHF for a fragile video mixer. It undercuts professional makers. I have had a low opinion of Apple innovation for half a decade or more. I replaced a 2016 MBP with a Pi5. Apple charges professional prices. It gives amateur products. I am happy I fell out of love with apple products. It's cheaper this way. https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2024/05/final-cut-pro-transforms-video-creation-with-live-multicam-on-ipad-and-new-ai-features-on-mac/

@clive It's because I tried to update my 2016 mac book pro to the latest FCP X and couldn't. It took a while for me to notice. I want to experiment with Kdenlive. @crutlefish
