@linuxgal It should be an EMD GP-9. Although I personally prefer to store an English Electric 'Deltic' Class 55 in my pants pocket. Is there anyone more obnoxiously pendantic than a railway enthusiast? :blobcatgiggle:

@xenenic Is there any way to install an option ROM and use the XT-IDE Universal BIOS? Or even set it as "no hard disc", boot from floppy, and use something like https://github.com/rvalles/optromloader to load it?I have a 386SX Magnavox desktop, and its BIOS will let you enter a geometry up to 8Gb(!) but the onboard BIOS did not know what to do with a SD-IDE adapter with a large card in it. XUB solved it, although the original BIOS reports an IDE error before booting.

@boilingsteam What catches my attention is that the stock photo is running #GenshinImpact. Considering that it's not even officially supported for the more robust Steam Deck, I'm wondering what's going on there. Would the #android release run viably on RISC-V? Or have they just pasted in a screenshot from elsewhere and didn't expect to answer questions?

@sterophonick There's a fascinating point to be made there.Wolfenstein was NOT a controversial political statement in 1992. It was a bold and violent way to say something -- "we do not care for with Nazis and want them gone"-- that was more or less a social consensus.NOW we see more political weight in that message because the underlying consensus is slipping away.I don't think the remainder of this toot can adequately cover WHY that's happening, but it's definitely troubling.

@foone I believe the standard is to use denture cleaning pellets. Safe for most keyboard materials, cheap, and pre-portioned.

@foone There was a window in the early 2000s where you could pretty much do a colour spectrum of PC performance:* Factory Black Computer (cheap new OEM tat where the PSU will give out before the installer finishes)* Beige Computer (Enthusiast who upgraded his 486 systematically to an Athlon XP)* Spray-Painted Black, Blue or Red Computer (Same, but overclocked)* Silver Computer (brand new Lian-Li case crammed with top-end kit)

@foone I wondered if a modern full Pi would be able to sniff the bus fast enough to serve as a "VGA emulator".I know the Pico can generate VGA, but it costs a lot of GPIOs to feed the colour DACs, and it would be nice to go to HDMI natively. For the trivial case, it would just render 640x480 scaled to fill a 1080p screen letterboxed and drive a modern monitor. More advanced options could support pop up windows to visualize the emulated VRAM and registers in different ways

My phone's SD card blew up, so I listened to #radio while working on a project today. So many right-wing ads, heavy anti-immigrant and anti-Harris. One of the ads literally started "Hey, young Americans" in a way that I can only hope was ironic awareness of the Fellow Kids meme.I wonder what demographic they were expecting; the station is 'alternative' format, the sort that brought out Rise Against for their annual charitable concert pre-pandemic. Can't imagine the audience skewing MAGA.

@futurebird @lnlyisol Normal people should never have been given access to computers. When the audience was technical people, they understood there was a sausage being made and could collaborate for the best sausage. Now that the market is "everybody", there's a lot of selling "magic". "We'll fix your mistakes" and "here's a bunch of LLM garbage" both dazzle low-skill users, and steer towards profitable choices. It just comes at the expense of competent users whose queries get clobbered.

@foone PHP isn't batteries-included. It's "the whole damn Batteries Plus Store Included."This is super-welcoming. There's no "you have to run a bunch of black-box scripts to generate a mountain of boilerplate before you get to hello world." There's much less "everything you want to do requires comparison-shopping third-party modules with dependency chains longer than a pedigree dog's family tree."

@lanodan @foone Not until the late 1982 BIOS revisions. But they had to be for the XT; basically every sensible hard disc (and plenty of nonsensible ones) uses an option ROM to fulfill INT 13H.Personally, my argument for "PC 2" would be the Compaq Deskpro 386, as that was the moment where the torch was officially no longer in IBM's hands. Most everything before that was either sheepishly copying IBM, or doing something unique that ended up failing in the marketplace.
