@TedUnderwood Oy, the hubris of this piece is _killing me_. Society cannot be harmed by "AGI", but it absolutely can be harmed by people behind the corporate shield hosting misbehaving computers on the Internet.Release it already and we'll see what happens. API or GTFO.

@TedUnderwood I hope you escape soon, you’ll love it. Simple, fast, cheap, and perfect for everything except actual chat IMHO.

@TedUnderwood They really shouldn't have outsourced the copy writing to ChatGPT.

@TedUnderwood Try asking it which model it's running. It insists that it's "based on OpenAI's GPT-3, which was released in 2020." 🤣

Hey, Infosec friends.I'm seeing a sharp uptick in employment scams at work. People claiming to be us will run fake "job interviews" via Teams or Zoom. When the victim gets "hired", the scammers harvest personal data and try to get them to purchase "home office equipment", etc.Any thoughts on actions to take? Aside from posting a disclaimer on our careers page (we do) and following up with providers any time a phone number or email address from the scammers is reported, I'm at a loss.

@Mer__edith Note that the word “safety” doesn’t appear once in that piece.I work in pharma research. The likelihood that you will make a contaminated product, or a different product than you intend, is extremely high in the absence of stringent controls.Equitable access is an ongoing injustice that needs better solutions, absolutely. But the DIY path, however well intentioned, encourages making placebos and accidentally poisoning people.

@Mer__edith No disagreement on that specific point. I just think that the risk/reward is much more out of balance than folks outside the industry realize.Check out this recent bit by Derek Lowe: https://www.science.org/content/blog-post/sneaky-impurityIt's one tiny edge case in a sea of manufacturing unknowns.Where is the kitchen NMR? Or HPLC rig? Even if you make the right molecule, how do you correctly and consistently dose it?That 404 Media piece is irresponsible for promoting false hope and ignoring real risks.
