@bt hey, this is always my first sentence in customer setups “hey, nice monitoring - but who monitors the monitor?” :)

Yep, free tunnel services like:- HE/TB- Route64- netassist- tb CHEtc can help. But that’s out of BoxyBSD’s business. BoxyBSD simply requires you to have IPv6 for SSH@m0xEE @farooqkz @42

What means or is #selfhosting for you?I think most ones will identify this with simply running something on their own system, that is under their own control. But is this enough? For data sovereignty probably…- Is that really enough?- What about everything else? What about the infrastructure? - Should you run your own ntp, dns etc?- What about your provider? Simply getting an IP assigned from your provider or become yourself an ISP?Where does it start and where does it end?#fediverse #homelab #hosting #isp #network #isp #provider #hosting #freebsd #linux #bgp #subnet #ipv6 #proxmox #bhyve #lab #spielwiese #infrastructure #control

@grunfink thanks for all your great work and I can’t say how much I regret that I was simply too impatient and switched to Mastodon. Moving back on the same domain requires me to do a bit more like:- creating snac on a new domain- moving/migrating my account to the new domain- creating snac on my old domain- moving/migrating my account to the old domain againI’m still too lazy but this must be done! I need to get rid of this slow, fatty Elephant/Mastodon.

When your free service (@BoxyBSD) kicks you out of bed on a Saturday morning. The monitoring just alerted me about a potential abuse at my free hosting project and indeed - much traffic from a single user but luckily legit traffic.Better safe than sorry.#hosting #isp #network #freeVPS #vps #vm #boxybsd #runbsd #ipv6 #bgp #peering #opensource #education

Just got a second hand QNAP TS559 Pro 2 including 5x 2T disks (at least no major SMART issues) for just 20 bucks… insane. And all corporate data left on the disks for free 🫣

Haha yeah. It should have been a bit more, but I haven’t had my notebook with me and could only rely on the QNAP display and it always hang in “starting service”. So, I was a bit worried - even after factory reset the same - usually it should state the IP or something like a success state. So, he wanted to get rid of it and he offered it for just 20€@m0xEE @stefano

@jan full Prometheus / Grafana approach. No classic monitoring like Zabbix or Icinga anymore.

@danimo I'm also happy with chrony. Most of my public instances run on it in the pool(s).

@stefano ouch, but it’s more “I don’t understand” in combinations with “pay as you go” (which is often the way used within clouds but limited to).Hey, I can remember when I created a 4,000 USD (ok 3,872.63$ bill) just by enabling debug logs on a Friday afternoon (and forgetting to disable it) with a huge growing amount of logs :)

Running a single user (or small) instance in the Fediverse? Relay instances acting as a spreading proxy can help you to find your content and also to make your posts visible to others - and you can easily join with #Mastodon, #snac and many other ones! The https://fedi-relay.gyptazy.com relay is mostly for tech related content and just got updates to the manpageblog design.#mastodon #snac #relay #activitypub #fediverse #federated #bsd #devops #proxmox #ipv6 #opensource #community #debian #python

Hey there,I must admit, I wouldn't go with HDDs anymore except for long-term storage or file hosting. It depends on the count of VMs utilizing those disks, but just effectively having 2 disks for X VMs will decrease the overall I/O performance for the guests. So maybe, you like to share some more information about your plans and how/what you like to place there. @blint @stefano
