@hn50 I'm not an expert by any stretch but when Google offer something for free my spidey senses start tingling.

@kev lol. I didn't even know that 'brutalism', if that's a word, was a thing, let alone it having limits! I agree it would a royal pita barrier. Need to check out brutal design and Haydon Pickering now, thanks for the distraction! :)

@stux I have one of these networked laser faxes, every 6 years or so it needs a new developer unit. The guy that fitted the last one said there were no more in existence. Purchased in 2001. :) Good value.

@kev @StartpageSearch It's beyond belief that they did that. Spend a decade or more building a brand then ditching your principles.Alternatives? I do get challenged a lot with Startpage because I use a VPN, I guess, but seems OK. They have an agreement with Google for results, so now I wonder if they do the same....... :(

@LinuxLounge Um, I've educated my kids about the dangers and privacy in general. I've equipped them Android phones. Told them why I no longer use Google services and why I don't shop with Amazon. I've given them Yubikeys and access to my quality VPN provider. I'll let you know how they work out in a few years. lol.PS. Interesting chat with youngest the other day. He was explaining to me why he thought Elon Musk is a bit of a self-centred tosser. :)

I think I've got my family, kids included, fully protected against this state led (UK) invasion of privacy. #snooperscharterhttps://www.publictechnology.net/articles/features/excl-wall-silence-surrounds-plan-nationwide-collection-citizens%E2%80%99-internet-records

@kev I removed GA from my site years and years ago. It became much more responsive. Used server-side SmarterStats for a while which was brilliant, but the provider wanted to start charging for it, so dropped that too.

@privacybrowser @huy_ngo "parses untrusted data" wow that almost put my brain in an infinite loop. Pretty much all data fall into that bracket, because it transits..... I'll just leave you to ponder...... lol...

@kev @edboythinks I'm a Proton customer and torn on this. It's solid. Proper encryption. I've one of the old Visionary accounts, so have custom domains, unlimited users, mail, drive, calendar and VPN. I think, 100's of Gb of storage etc. It costs about £200 a year. I also run a Nextcloud instance with S3 storage which maybe costs less than £100 which I can build on or migrate to Proton. So, Proton 'costs' about £100 over and above.... I'm torn.... :(

@kev @edboythinks I don't think Gmail supports stuff like PGP etc. directly. I'm not even sure the recipient will even get a link. I assumed they would end up with an encrypted e-mail in their in box and not much else. The onus is on the recipient to use an e-mail client that can decrypt. Once PGP is configured by both parties it works well.I think there maybe an option in Proton to password protect an e-mail which just sends link, like you suggest, but clearly that's a dogs dinner approach.

@kev I've just brought them up to despise Google, Amazon et. al. Explained privacy thoroughly, that they are the product etc. with a free app. Provided them with quality VPN to keep them safe on free WiFi. Given them Yubikeys to secure their accounts. And just keep on at them! Educate, educate, educate.I'll let you know how it pans out in a few years. lol.

@kev @ru Your comment on Write.as made me chuckle, I thought it was the simplest! It's just plain markdown with absolutely no frills and it's free too!
