@dansup @andypiper @loops wait, it's STILL not federated? How were you boosting your videos with this account then?

@codinghorror tracking users is not a technical requirement for any website to work. The intention with these warnings was to deter tracking, not almost every website punishing its visitors into submission.

Why is most CLI software so insufferable with its error messages? And why do some Linux distros not have ifconfig any more?

Counterexample: Python REPL does it right. (I was checking if I have Python already installed in this VM)

#Smithereen 0.11 is out! This one mostly focuses on groups and moderation. Groups now have discussion boards, admins can specify server rules (with translations!), moderators have more and better tools at their disposal, and users can now pin posts and export their data.Detailed changelog here: https://github.com/grishka/Smithereen/releases/tag/0.11Now comes the part where I build the client API I promised everyone for so long. And the website.#ActivityPub #mastodev

@silverpill @julian @technical-discussion ideally you would traverse everything and replace anything you don't understand with "id" references. But anyway, I feel like we're getting too carried away about a very niche aspect of the whole thing. Almost like on that SocialHub forum. In my own AP extensions I always just act like C2S doesn't exist because I've never seen it used in practice, and it's wildly impractical to use anyway.

TIL that there was this lost media Russian music video that people spent years looking for. It was finally found yesterday on a cassette that someone who archives TV recordings bought as part of a lot.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzmOLwNS9l8

@stux I really hope the speed of light isn't a fundamentally insurmountable limit. Because if it is, this would mean the universe is a rather boring place.

Sometimes, when reading an article, I find myself looking at its publication date just to see if it could have possibly been tainted by AI...

@Gargron IMO the only long-term solution to this is Android getting completely separated from Google. The "annoy users into submission" approach they take with Play Protect right now is already very much overstepping.

@Gargron and in the longer run, our society desperately needs a technology to modify modern microelectronics at home or at least at a well-equipped repair shop.

Lol, VKontakte is becoming even more Facebook. Or Twitter. They removed the docs for half the API methods (that mysteriously stopped working for third-party app IDs a while ago anyway), and for half of the remaining half, they did this.Translation:"photos" permission required, issued in exceptional cases by request to support via email blah blah

I need opinions on #Smithereen API.For notifications, which format would you prefer more, this https://smithereen.software/docs/api/methods/notifications.get/ or something even more deduplicated with `wall_posts`, `comments`, `photos`, and `board_topics` as separate arrays? Or maybe something else?#activityPub #mastodev

So someone built an unofficial server for the Mail.Ru Agent, an IM app that was briefly popular in Russia in the late 00s before VK introduced instant messaging. Of course I had to give it a try.So this is a reminder that *this* is what peak desktop instant messaging UI looks like. Just imagine this, combined with all the modern IM features like media attachments, replies, stickers, and reactions. And none of that tablet-ass everything-is-modal crap.
