Anyone else ever lead incident response for a big security incident and after handing it over had this weird compulsive FOMO about it? Like, even when you know that things have mostly stopped going on you feel like you should be providing context and directing people?

@Korgdisso people are *fucking weird* about each other’s eating habits. I took in some meal replacement shakes to work for a while and people seemed to think that I was suggesting they never eat anything fun ever again. Also I’d never try to tell someone that what they’re eating isn’t good for them - that’s a great way of pissing people off and gaining absolutely no traction for your cause. No unsolicited advice goes unpunished.

@Korgdisso one of the beneficial side effects of the specialisation of labour that capitalism promotes is the reduction of impact that the well-rounded individual with perspective and varied expertise can have. After all, it would be terrible for people who can see what’s going on to be offering opinions that are received in proportion to how much thought and consideration went in to them.God forbid anybody actually has a broad idea of what’s going on.

Fucking loooolWhilst working on Other Stuff, I decided to exercise my curiosity on whether @kvik's port of lua to Plan 9 (https://sr.ht/~kvik/lu9/) would successfully run Fennel (https://fennel-lang.org/) and the results are hilarious. Here is a screenshot of me literally downloading the fennel script, chmodding it so it'll run, fixing up the #! and then using the fennel repl to take a screenshot of the window I did it all in.I wasn't expecting to have that degree of success so quickly!#9front #plan9 #lua #fennel

I've discovered that you can in fact de-acclimatize yourself to advertising, largely from removing exposure fairly consistently over a long period of time. The problem with that is the intense sense of alienation and distaste you get when exposed (for whatever reason) again.Curating your own sensory inputs at the cost of being naturalized to the consensus human experience. Yikes.

My heart breaks for all the freaks and weirdos who just want to create something new and beautiful and humanistic but have to spend their days toiling on the godforsaken canvas of "work".I hope you all find your magnum opus.

Do you think that time only moves in one direction or we only perceive it in one direction?

@razna I find it deeply suspicious that in the 3 spatial dimensions we can move in either direction but in time we can only move in one. It seems like some real Plato’s Cave bullshit and what we see as cause and effect could actually be modelled as continuity if you allow for visibility either way.Like, if you could only move forward, you’d say “I am here because I was there” when actually having been spatially there has nothing to do with anything because the dimensions are orthogonal, the only weird thing being that you can’t be at the same time coordinate twice in different spatial coordinates…I dunno, late night musings.

How much of the engagement with environmentally responsible consumerism is (unknowingly) performative?I’m personally of the belief that the acts of individuals (whilst worthwhile) are a drop in the ocean compared to corporate, governmental and infrastructural responsibility.I think this, in turn, makes personal environmentalism comparable to pious asceticism.I’ve been reading a book on the history of Kabbalah and one of the ideas is that by living a spiritually correct life you not only heal yourself but reciprocally help restore creation to its divine state. These are just idle musings and pattern matching. It is still a very good thing to not use plastic straws - I like sea turtles.

@adam they don’t manufacture repairable devices, and very few people do. In fact the industry standard is planned obsolescence and a continual upgrade cycle. When I last upgraded my phone I didn’t want to - it still worked but there were no longer software updates. The idea of consumer choice relies on there being viable alternatives - for instance if you boycott Apple or the majority of other smartphone manufacturers who have similar practices, what are you left with? Manually installing community maintained ROMs on an ageing Android handset which you can’t repair because parts will become scarce and you can no longer use the online banking app because it has rooted phone detection?Consumer choice is a myth here - you can only buy what’s offered and a meaningful opt-out is disproportionately difficult and involves sacrifices that aren’t even related to what you’re trying to achieve.Pious asceticism.
