Any suggestions on an alternative to #Cloudflare for an #indieweb project?I'm running a little thing that's hosted on home internet and we put CF in front of it for caching and security. Looking to move to something with better politics but not sure what that is for this use-case.

My #feditips for new/returning people:1. Follow fast. Follow people here even if you didn't on Twitter. Glance thru the local timeline and follow anyone you see post anything funny or interesting. You need stuff in your feed.2. Unfollow just as fast if you're not vibing.3. When a friend joins, turn on post notifications. It's the đź”” on their profile.4. This site is slower paced. Snarky hot takes aren't rewarded as much.5. Toot! is a good iOS app. People seem to like Tusky for Android.

Californians, beware of canvassers asking you to sign something to “help minimum wage workers.” It’s actually Starbucks, Chipotle and McDonald’s trying to *overturn* a minimum wage increase. https://perfectunion.us/fast-food-giants-trying-to-overturn-pro-worker-law-in-california/

When I joined #mastodon, I just wanted an open-source #twitter clone.I got more than that. Subtle design differences made for healthier conversations in ways I wasn't expecting. Here's a blog post to try to capture those differences and why they matter. https://scott.mn/2022/10/29/twitter_features_mastodon_is_better_without/

@thomasfuchs What a weird thing to say, "aligned COVID guidance to meet where most Americans are." What is the point of public health guidance if it is going to be "aligned" with what the public was doing anyway? This whole statement only makes sense as a volley in a culture war, not science.

Interesting to note that the authors of ActivityPub (the protocol Mastodon is based on), including @cwebber whose thread I just boosted, have received very little attention compared to the Mastodon guy. https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/

I’m on a bunch of activist Slacks where we constantly lose message history because of the 90 day retention limit. Slack’s pricing makes it essentially impossible for grassroots activists to afford a paid plan.Is anyone aware of an activist group that’s gotten around this by hosting its own Matrix server (or used Zulip or similar open-source tech)? Are you part of a group that would want to try this if someone set it up for you?

Good points by @edward on how the git/GitHub/pull request monoculture is holding us back.I have an account on Codeberg, the co-operative, fully open source, code hosting site, but it’s basically a GitHub clone—what if, freed from the monopoly, we found better ways to collaborate?https://blog.edwardloveall.com/lets-make-sure-github-doesnt-become-the-only-option #openSource #git #github

Finally, Mastodon is about to have a normal search function that actually works!Well, almost. You'll have to opt into it by making your account "discoverable," which is off by default. That's not ideal imo because most people will want to be found and not know to turn this on.Still, progress! You can also opt individual posts out by setting their privacy to "Unlisted."https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/26344

I'm probably the most pessimistic about technology I've been.2015: lots of tech companies are fine. Even Facebook is a reformed evil company that's not that bad now. We're [I worked there] helping people connect!2021: for-profit tech is bad, but we can collectivize technology for the greater good! Co-op all the things!2023: a lot of tech is inherently centralizing, which tends to centralize power and alienate us from one another, and has little value other than that.

@interfluidity @jwz Good idea, but the best time to start that would have been 20 years ago.

One of the worst misfeatures of #Mastodon from a safety angle: If you get an abusive reply to your post, you can't remove it even by blocking the person. Even after blocking, your server still shows the abusive reply to everyone else. There has been a patch ready to fix this for 2 years, 6 months, and 1 day. @Gargron has not approved it, and has provided *zero* explanation for why he will not allow it to be merged.https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/18468

To opt out of having Google inject ads for Google into your website, you have to be signed into a Google account (and so have agreed to their TOS). https://9to5google.com/2024/11/25/google-ios-app-link-annotations-search/

This is a lowkey horror story. Forum posts dated 18 years ago turn out to be backdated AI slop, falsely attributed to what used to be human accounts.@hakan_geijer https://kolektiva.social/@hakan_geijer/113891105255157286
