@futurebird @Dss I used to teach the "etymology" of %, as /oo or /100, with the 1 0 moved up(anyone know why? I don't!)And o/oo for per thousand.I don't think I've expressed it well here tho!

@futurebird @Dss that too: teach that "per" means divide, cent is from century.SO much maths misunderstanding is just not knowing the language. The kids can do the thing, they just didn't know what it was called, and so couldn't do it in the test. Maths vocab is so important!

@futurebird This thread seems to have touched a nerve...I would love to know how you locals feel about Doctorow's take on your tax system: You aren't _supposed_ to understand it: https://pluralistic.net/2025/02/11/doubling-up-on-paperwork/#rip-freefileHere at the bottom of Africa, it gets worked out for us, we can check and complain, or just proceed. It can be that easy.

@futurebird mmm. I can see the potential. They have enough building blocks to work with by then.

@futurebird seeing that "aha" moment as a concept truly clicks is my big reason for teaching. Add a robot physically doing a thing? Dopamine addiction shall follow!

@futurebird mmm. I convert the syllabus to a mind map, and explicitly tea h from that, in the order of my choosing, ticking off elements as we go. My kids love it. I had one who found I topic I missed in transcription!Busy writing a tool to allow mapping the dependencies more explicitly, which is very valuable. There is a whole discipline analysing this in depth, and a Moodle add in that allows you to make your course a literal map, with weighpoints and all.

@futurebird In direct answer to your question *why* nobody reads syllabii, I think it would depend on what material the teachers are given. In my current system, there is a syllabus statement, there are past exam papers with memos, and every 6 months, there is an exam. Get there how you will. The SA government system has a document which gives mandatory lesson topics on a day-by-day basis, for every subject, from Gr0 - Gr12. I never needed to read the syllabus then.

@strypey I'm a big fan of #noscript It breaks some payment sites, but a second go works.

@futurebird I actually tried this at the end of last year. Our student journalists, who have a (school hosted) blog, wanted an IG handle, which was a hard no. But I offered to setup a PixelFed instance, and figure out how to link that to AD, so every kid in the school would get a handle. They weren't interested. They wanted to be where everyone else is (IG) above all. I asked them who was going to start the "new thing" if not them, but they didn't want to put in the effort.

@futurebird To be fair, this was a less than averagely motivated cohort, which biased it. I will try again at some point.During covid, we set up (in house) Woocommerce sites so the matrics could do their fundraising bake sales, etc. Worked really well - but they had the motivation.

@futurebird @apophis@brain.worm.pink communication in schools is a perennial nightmare. Our MIS handles most of the parent side stuff, and Google Classroom a lot of the rest. But I still have 40+ emails a day to process.Here (South Africa) there are a coue of dedicated school comms packages.Privacy is also a thing - parents with access to teachers private phone num ers is a big no at my school, which I appreciate. Also, email has an auditable trail, not something most social media platorms have.

@futurebird I go with "symbols" in Yr10 when I teach it. Certainly avoid "number", because one of the big ideas is to separate the notion of "number" from its representation.Fun if I have Arabic or Korean or Chinese students. I ask them to write up their digits.

@futurebird @alter_kaker runestone.academy uses skulpt.You could either use one of their courses (not gr5 level though), or possibly locally host skulpt or some other jython?
