In many ways the need of science to materially poke and prod and investigate everything in order to "know" the "laws" of the universe is no different than ancient forms of omen-seeking or divination. In Roman times some practiced what was called "augury", and that's where totally subjective things were observed and tracked, for instance the flight pattern of birds or the entrails of an animal, and the data was collected in order to divine omens. In my opinion Science is the modern extension of that sort of archaic practice, where today it has emerged as a real competition to The Church and religions who previously divined and wrote down "The Law". The Law can often times be very commanding. I recommend reading this book.

The thing to understand about the spiritual power that the symbol of Mercury represents is that it is an ancient, european power. It has been subverted by a dark priestly caste.
