@tripu I think the flaw in his reasoning is simply second order effects. Being deceptive and risking people's investments can make altruists seem reckless and untrustworthy, and I don't think this bodes well for future (public) effective altruists.

@tripu Also, it does seem reckless, because he couldn't know who had invested in those funds really, it's not wise to be such a judge I think.

@tripu Finally, I think this misses the point of EA which is inviting everyone to cooperate and donate to ones in most need, not steal from a minority -- even if it were a deserving one -- which is a much more robust, longlasting and reliable solution to improving the world, I believe. Thanks for sharing.edit: I'm not a specialist to say this qualifies as theft or fraud. In any case the least he could do was make the risk very clear.

@tripu I don't think it's robust because he (#SBF) couldn't possibly solve the world's problems single-handedly. This wasn't an all or nothing for the future of mankind. But the idea of #EffectiveAltruism itself could be of fundamental importance to humanity's future, so I don't think this strategy is warranted, except in more clear cases where a good future for humanity were decisively at stake.

@tripu By the way, thank you as well. I'm feeling very welcome in #mastodon. It's very personal and different from reddit which I'm most used to. I still like reddit, but building personal, close and hopefully lasting connections seems very nice. 😀

@tripu I think it's good to remember ethics is about balance. In a sense, everyone is a consequentialist/utilitarian in a way -- we would lie to ourselves otherwise -- because people usually brush their teeth in the morning expecting lasting dental health, work and save for retirement, and so on. One of the oldest tenets of wisdom is to properly weight the far future against the near future, and to value other beings. We are all consequentialists, although we should be wise about it.

@tripu I too am very worried about men's mental health, I see this in real life frequently (including homeless) -- I don't think holding out compassion for a group, even if considered advantaged in certain terms (like certain workplace advantages or wealth) can justify a lack of empathy and overlooking that is very real and sad. May all beings be treated with empathy and respect, we all deserve it! ❤️ 🌍

@tripu Nice! Do you teach school, technical or higher education? I'm considering going into education as well.

@tripu If you're willing to go the trouble, laser cutting and engraving mdf or plywood sheets with separate continents should be quite inexpensive (esp. If there's a maker space nearby), then you can glue or double-side tape to the wall (being careful with contiment positioning), also quite aesthetically pleasing :)

@tripu My pleasure, whatever you do -- please avoid Mercator projection in favor of something more modern (and in a way, geographically representative)! I think it's particularly good to have equal area (unless you specifically and transparently want to focus on a certain region). I think a Lambert azimuthal map would look really cool, although for more traditional Winkel III (chosen by National Geographic) is also nice. #map
