@grumpy my pleasure! your focus on local varieties and experimentation is very refreshing (and much needed imo). the inaturalist website is a great resource for learning about species in your area.straw will support many of the leaf-litter decomposers you might find in your local environment. you could try to establish wild-sourced mycelium in straw or you could cut the stem-butts off saprotrophic mushrooms and introduce those to the straw. observe and interact :)

A Plea for Lean Software - Niklaus Wirth (1995)So many pearls of wisdom in this paper; wish I had read it four years ago when I started programming."Reducing complexity and size must be the goal in every step—in system specification, design, and in detailed programming.""Truly good solutions emerge after iterative improvements or after redesigns that exploit new insights, and the most rewarding iterations are those that result in program simplifications."https://cr.yp.to/bib/1995/wirth.pdf

It's quite poetic that our species may eventually be unable to venture past low Earth orbit without first dealing with all the trash we've strewn across space.https://orbitaldebris.jsc.nasa.gov/photo-gallery/_video/orbital-debris-flythrough-animation.mp4

Dervla Murphy, an Irish touring cyclist and author of adventure travel books."In 1963 Murphy set off on her first long-distance bicycle tour, a self-supported trip from Ireland to India. Taking a pistol along with other equipment aboard her Armstrong Cadet men's bicycle (named Rozinante in allusion to Don Quixote's steed, and always known as Roz), she passed through Europe during one of the worst winters in years."#theBikeshed

Fun morning diversion: fitting new tyres with some vaporwave beats in the background.I had my heart set on 35's but it seems the entire country is out of stock. Opted for the 32's instead. I'm on paved surfaces most of the time so it's not a big deal.Really looking forward to riding this evening!#theBikeshed

@neauoire excellent article! thanks for sharing. it is relatable to my experience on scuttlebutt in so many ways.also reminds me of some sections of darius' "run your own social" article, especially the bits about scale."Any time I propose a new piece of software to a group of software engineers I'm asked the same question: how will it scale? [..] I'd like to advance the notion that software does not have to scale, and in fact software can be better if it is not built to scale."

Almost four years have passed since I grew this mycelium bowl and it's still in remarkably good condition.

A question for the microbiologists of the Fediverse:How do you record data about your cultures and cultivation activities? Are you using pen and paper? Spreadsheets? Some kind of custom-purpose software?I'm thinking of data such as: species being cultured, substrate media being used, dates of transition between media, incubation temperatures, contamination events, sporulation events etc.Boosts welcome.#microbiology #labwork #mycology #bacteriology

Rode a new loop today. My phone died so I'm not sure exactly how far I went in the end but it was close to 70 km.Passed through some beautiful valleys and traced along the seashore; the vivid fields and monochromatic beach serving up a stark contrast.I should really do these rides in the early morning and not at midday -_^#theTrail

When writing log statements for an application, do you prefer to log what is about to be done or what has been done? For example:"Initialising database..."or"Database initialised"

Anyone keen to join in some Novimber action?Just a playful excuse to learn some new shortcuts, tips and tricks in vim. No pressure to do x things per day, maybe just share the occasional TIL along the way. Could be fun :)Background: I use vim as my code editor and general purpose text editor but my vimfu still leaves a lot to be desired. @cblgh and I have been talking about improving in that regard.P.s. Please don't @ me about other code editors 🙃

Watched Vesper last night; stunning film!Beautifully imaginative with captivating world-building. Intensely emotional at times. Enchanting depiction of low-tech synthetic biology in practice, along with a rad humyn-computer interface.Reminded me a lot of Borne by Jeff VanderMeer. Thanks for the recommendation, @cblgh ^_^#theCinema

Planning to put together a battery-powered single-board computer setup for off-grid programming because I live in the near-future where the flow of electricity is intermittent and unpredictable.Current parts list:- RPi 3B+- 7" IPS display- 13000 mAh powerbank- 10000 mAh powerbank- KeyboardI already own the Pi, 13000 mAh powerbank and keyboard. Just need to acquire the other two items, then I can run the display and Pi from separate power sources.
