@penguin42 I would love to know how if they are here really looking at these constructs as "stop gap/hot fix for the immediate issue" and plan permanent fixes, or if they settled with just draping things like this on rainy days forever.Installations of this style are quite common.

I was just using the washing machine for the first time and added another fun part to the article: power outlets do not have a proper contact for "ground". So outlets intended to be used by washing machines etc. have a small lid, a screw, and then you attach the ground cable manually..I wonder which content warning this needs for electrical engineers ;)

I spent some hours at "Makuhari", an IBM facility near Tokyo. We were invited to see z-series mainframe hardware (not pictures allowed though..), and then hear details.punch-card readers and also other hardware was around. One of the colleagues confirmed upfront that there was no dress code - so I came with my SUN microsystems shirt.

First day of this year's trip to Tochigi-ken, for this year's rice planting. 126km to Uzunomiya. The bags attached to the bike make it much more convenient than the backpack I used last year.

I noticed single houses and walls, made from this special stone. It's 大谷石/Oja-stone, sourced in the area around Utsunomiya. Easy to carve out and form, also insulating well - many of these houses store food.

As I got the Japan #HAMradio license, I unlocked also a new field of interest when going to Akihabara! There are quite some shops with radio tech. Most interesting: I was every now and then in "Superpotato", a retro game shop. One of the most famous HAM radio stores is on the ground floor of the same building. Not sure how I could ignore that all these years. :)

"With the end of Prohibition and the outbreak of World War II, the still dry US Navy was provided with ice cream on almost every ship.""Ice cream was important for morale. In 1942, the U.S.S. Lexington was slowly sinking from a Japanese torpedo attack, before the crew abandoned ship, they broke into the freezer and ate all the ice cream."Setting priorities is so important :)https://www.oldsaltblog.com/2025/05/how-ice-cream-replaced-booze-in-the-us-navy-2/

Fun in language learning: I wrote "gnu-radio has a steep learning curve" on a mailing list. A native English speaker commented "[..] steep learning curve would actually mean that you understand a topic quickly". Then I realized: I had never actually thought about the phrase, I had merely heard others using it, inferred a meaning, and then started to use it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Learning_curve#In_cultureThe thread is here: https://lists.tlug.jp/ML/2601/msg00001.html

Snow in Tokyo.. rare!Just right for taking time, going to the bath - sitting in the water while snowing, and then a good lunch.
