Time for a "the media of all time" thread.Basically, this will be a thread of whatever I've watched/played/listened to, whether I liked it and whether or not I'd recommend it.These existed on the birdsite but I always forgot to make them there since there was no appropriate time for them. Given that I think timeliness is silly, this is just gonna be da media seen thread.

Before I start in earnest, I think I should probably also point out that I have an anilist account where I just track what I'm watching in terms of anime (albeit rather sporadically): https://anilist.co/user/noirscape/That one is just a watch tracker though, don't put too much value on it.

So with that...1. Dead LeavesHonestly, Imaishi's weakest outing. Dead Leaves has the unfortunate case where it has everything that makes Imaishi's work awesome but it's all just... too vestigial and done better later. The artstyle is absolutely a big draw, but the characters are too rushed through to really give me the time to care for them. Animation is vibrant yet doesn't have the same impact as his later shows (given Imaishi also worked on REDLINE as a key animator, that movie does basically this exact same style but better). The music is frankly kinda forgettable and it really undercuts the otherwise explosive action scenes.Do not recommend unless you really are deeply into Imaishi's work.

       2) VA-11 HALL-A Sapphic Pussy RhapsodyOk that's a title. A good one. Attached to a pretty good short story. If you've played VA-11 HALL-A, go read this. If you haven't played VA-11 HALL-A... go play VA-11 HALL-A? I unfortunately had to stop my daily read-through this year cuz I came down with a cold but y'know, that story will always hold up. An amazing companion piece to just an amazing game.Don't want to spoil much about this one, just... go read it! Sukeban does fun stuff. This is part of that fun stuff.Go read it here: https://sukebangames.itch.io/va11halla-sapphic-pussy-rhapsody

       3. Pokemon Scarlet & Violet (played Violet)Not done with these games yet, but they're a return to form after the disaster that was Sword & Shield. Ran in the occasional camera bug, but the gameplay is solid, which is what matters in the end.

       4. Cyberpunk: EdgerunnersSecond rewatch, probably won't be the last. What can I say really... Edgerunners was amazing the first time I watched it last year. Watching it again, 6 months later? Yeah this show still upholds the usual marks of quality you come to expect from Trigger - breakneck pace, animation that puts most anime to shame and a lovable cast that hits every single emotional note it wants to. If you haven't seen this yet, go watch it.That's not a recommendation. That's an order.

       5. SignalisI finished this game 2 days ago and it's still haunting me. An absolute masterpiece of a game. A scifi robot survival horror doesn't sound like it'd be up my alley, but it is. It's not... exactly a scary game but it makes up for that with the sheer emotional weight it throws at you. This is a game I've picked up, played for an hour or 2 and then had to put it down just because of how oppressively heavy it feels. That's not a complaint by the way. I love it when games atmosphere is so intense, it's world filled with such a sense that everything has a place and the feeling that even though you're getting further, you also probably won't ever know all the answers.A lot of modern media have this desire to be "solved". Signalis has all the details of a game begging to be "solved" but at the same time feels like it won't ever be. And... that's really beautiful. It's just a really strong, really satisfying story that leaves me begging for more. And that's the way I like my stories.I really recommend this one, it's more likely than not going to be my GOTY of 2023 (even though it released in 2022).Link to get it: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1262350/SIGNALIS/

       6. Fate/Extella: the Umbral Star (and Link)This is one of those games that's hard to sell to people. I mean this is a sequel to Fate/Extra but at the same time it's not a direct sequel yet it expect you to know the lore of Extra to feel at home. That said, this is without a doubt one of the better musou games I've played. On the whole the Umbral Star plays better than Link, which was a bit too easy for my liking, even on hard mode. That in mind though, Link adds some of the cooler servants in the franchise as playale characters. The story mode of the original Extella is quite good, if a bit fanservice-y. Can recommend the games easily though. Best version to get for the original is definitely the Switch port if you have the chance - all DLC and extra costumes are bundled and given to you upon completion of the story mode, no extra payments necessary. For Link, just get it wherever really. Any system it's on will probably be able to handle it.https://store.steampowered.com/app/511680/FateEXTELLA/

@lanodan @Moon @moth_ball for where it counts, XP source code was leaked a couple years ago I think?the problem really is just that it's fucking radioactive unless Microsoft opens up the license. (which they might not be legally able to do, at least if you want a "functional" source code release rather than a source dump, since XP shipped with drivers on the install disc.)

Reading an essay on how bad self-deprecation can be for you really made me realize how much the internet casually likes to beat down people's self-esteem if you just take in a passive media stream.Either by constantly exposing you to peers who seem way more skilled than you or the eternal doom cycle of people telling you that they also suck. Therefore - I don't know who this is for, but in case you need to hear it: it's okay to be confident in your skills. It's okay to be proud of things you've made. It's okay to be proud of even the smallest achievements. And above all else: it's okay to make mistakes. We all do. You'll get better. It's not the end of things.

I'll say what I said before - if you have trouble understanding why Facebook with its dozens of teams whose sole duty is moderation still has problems with letting hate foster, why are you expecting unpaid volunteers to take up the same volume for it vis-a-vis just necking the issue at the source.Blocking Threads isn't some exclusive club stuff. It's literally just "we can't handle this volume of general VLOP garbage" and that's how it should be read.

(Limbus Company and Moby Dick joke)Woman goes to doctor. Says she's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says she feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says, 'Treatment is simple. Captain Ahab is in town tonight. Go and see her. That should pick you up.' Woman bursts into tears. Says, 'But doctor…I am already Ahab.'

Hey, so new pinned post (to add to the pile) - but I'd like to talk a bit my development of Black here in the future. What is Black? It's my personal booru project. The name comes from the practice of naming boorus after yourself and my main handle translates to black from french; the name makes sense. The full name will be blackbooru to prevent confusion with the syntax formatter. Why make a new booru project?Because I don't like any of the current ones. To elaborate a bit more, the current booru I use personally is szurubooru, which is perfectly functional but it has some quirks, one of which being that it is extremely annoying to develop for - it uses a bunch of custom frameworks and the documentation is rather poor on the idea that it should be self-documenting. The other reason is that the project is a bit stalled and the pool implementation is a mess.Other booru projects I reject because most are either Gelbooru 1.x forks (and no, we're not doing PHP) or Danbooru forks and I do not plan to work on this in Rails. Is it public? For now, no. I do intend on making it public once I feel it's ready. License is pending, although my personal preference leans towards a license that permits the least amount of friction for anyone looking to fork.Framework and language?Backend will be Django, mostly because I know how Django works, what parts to use and not use to keep it usable/understandable and how to properly be able to scale it up "as needed". Frontend is completely up in the air. One specific goal is to be able to loosely couple these - while it is a booru, there are a few loose goals that would also permit it to work with Tachiyomi (pool functionality) and Android booru apps (which means Danbooru API support) as well as the possibility for it to act as a generic file CMS. I have an internal application for booru stuff ready but am not interested in releasing that one, mostly because the code is a total mess (and it's meant to hook into a szurubooru instance serverside). Main goal is the backend anyway because that's what I like to work on.Why document this publicly?Because I think it could be interesting for people to follow along. Boorus are some of the most interesting applications to work on, showing some of the cooler functions of a CRUD app and I think the tech could use a lot of demystification. I also want to make this more accessible to interested people.ETAs?This is strictly a free-time, "when I'm motivated" project. No ETAs are given.

Okay, 3 weeks but I have an update - work is progressing on Black (slowly, again no ETAs) but I do have some basic ideas in place now for backend documentation and general project structure.Basically the way I'm planning it is as follows:We have one big central "core" application. The main idea behind this "core" application is that you can theoretically import a single module from it and then it basically works like an API directly. Think of it like a booru that only exists in classes/database models. Things like adding files, tagging and search goes in this core application as functionality. ACL (restricting post access by their tags) will also be handled in here. Then we have a special "ext" application. The idea behind ext is that it's any "fancy" functionality that kinda overlaps with the core DB functionality in a lot of ways but would be out of scope to put in the core application. For example, uploading from an external URL would go in here. I also have some long-term interest in maybe adding some actual extension/plugin tools, but uh... no immediate concerns. Ext will be considered stateless; anything that ext needs to do in the database will just be added to the core models. Then there's the API conversion applications. Basically applications that have no database models and handle all the views. These are pretty up in the air; looking through some APIs, I'll probably start with a danbooru and szurubooru mirror (danbooru for android apps, szuru for a personal frontend) and Komga for pool views (being a selfhosted thing that seems to integrate well with Tachiyomi).Right now I have some basic DB models for "core" set up, as well as a command to seed a database with a test admin user. Initial functionality will mostly focus on posts, tags and pools. One thing I'm not 100% on yet is where to handle caching. My gut says I should do it in core, considering that's where you get the most universal speed gains and you can invalidate caches there. OTOH, that means working with the django caching layer directly - which is fine, I like that kind of direct access, but it'd mean adding a few extra cache functions to eliminate by partial tag string.

@mawhrin @katharina_buholzer (steelman defense here, I don't really think ATProto is especially useful)The main things that ATProto "fixes" (not all of these are flaws - these are the practical technical differences) are:Portable identity... kinda - they offload the identity part onto putting a TXT record on your domain name (they originally wanted to do that crypto DID w3 standard, but the devs have basically openly stated that they think it's a dud goal and just do DNS identities only). The advantage is that it's not as ugly as just using a privkey for a decoupled identification. The disadvantage is of course, domain seizures being a possible thing, lapsed payments resulting in suspensions, you get the idea.Solves the problem of inefficient search/automatic discovery by adding the feature to decouple remote status indexing from the instance software and put it on another server. The same deal applies to algorithmic/interest sorts, although they decouple this all the way to a per application level (algorithm software is meant to connect to the index software). The Bluesky team has been pretty coy about the actual requirements to run the tools in question (they've dodged me specifically pointing this out when I asked them on HN), which leads me to believe that this is the "centralization" hook for the software.Decouples moderation of the previous indexing server into it's own server so users can opt into their preferred brand of moderation. When pointing out that nothing would stop the indexing server from just doing AP-style rejections (for just on a basic level... moderating spam?), once again, the Bluesky team has been silent.Overall, I do think that most of these features can just be extensions of ActivityPub (granted, that does requiring working with Gargron, so uh... okay I don't entirely blame them for not bothering), but beyond that it's really just a corporate "juuuust incompatible enough" variant of ActivityPub-style communication that adds enough centralization to let Bluesky get away with being a VC-backed thing for later value extraction. The decoupled moderation fits the more tech-libertarian free speech inanity altar.
