@Bongo hi, I'm curious as to why you sent me a follow request. You follow, among others, accounts on freespeechextremist and kiwifarms, so I'm not sure what your intentions are.

@TheGibson true, but that doesn't stop vulnerable users being understandably wary of a user who announces his intention to do exactly that just because he can.

@TheGibson I agree on the technical level. The issue for me is that there are vulnerable users spread across instances who may not have understood the technical details around federation and who is able to access what. Telling them they shouldn't have posted sensitive information because AP never specified protection does nothing to solve their problem. That horse has probably already bolted. 1/?

@TheGibson then we have actors on the fediverse threatening to put vulnerable people in danger just because there's nothing technical stopping them. Again the onus is put on already vulnerable people to defend themselves from this, rather than dealing with the threatening behaviour. 2/2

*yells from the rooftops* CALLING FOR SOMEONE TO FACE CONSEQUENCES FOR THEIR SHITTY BEHAVIOUR IS NOT CENSORSHIP.I really wish the demon of censorship wasn't invoked every time someone is called out for saying something awful.

Reminder: companies like Facebook and Google are a threat to the Internet and the Web. They want to keep you on their site (with Facebook it's pretty obvious, with Google it's through AMP) so they can keep serving you adverts, which earns them money. Those companies don't care about open access to information, privacy or consumer choice. Those values aren't profitable. What do you think they'll do when they control the majority of Web traffic?

It's entertaining to see yet another op-ed piece about how Mastodon (really, the Fediverse) isn't a success yet and it needs to think about growth so influencers will see it as a viable alternative to Twitter.I like to think the Fediverse is already a success, and the lack of influencers is a reason for that.

I spent the day setting up email on a personal domain and moving all my accounts to use that.Fuck you Google. I was an early adopter with Gmail and... yeah I fell for your trick. You got me hooked. But I'm clawing back my identity from you, piece by fucking piece.

I don't get it. Mr Robot makes such an effort to be technically accurate and then they show an invalid IP address. Sloppy.

I learned about the Three Gates of Speech today. Before saying/writing something, check if it passes these three "gates":1. Is it true?2. Is it necessary?3. Is it kind?I'm going to make an effort to keep this in mind from now on.

I've said it before, but it bears repeating: Cloudflare are, at this point, an active attacker against a significant portion of the Internet.

Today it was just npm, but a few months ago Cloudflare managed to disrupt access to most of their customers (which is a significant portion of sites and services on the Internet) due to a bug.Bugs happen, that's not a problem. The problem is one bug at one company caused that level of disruption. The old truism of "the Internet routes around damaged networks" doesn't hold anymore. That needs fixing.

@Ricardus I have been sampling a very fine Merlot. I know fuck all about wine (I can tell white from red 5 times out of 10) but I've been told I got this at a steal.

You know when you go back to watch a film you thought was awesome when you were a kid, and you can't even make it halfway through because it's actually awful? Batman Forever

I've seen people discussing which is the safest/most secure messenger and I haven't seen many mentions of #Briar.Briar (https://briarproject.org/) is an encrypted, decentralized messaging app that can even work with no Internet access. It doesn't require a phone number or any kind of personal information to create an account.
