If you're interested in your local history, one of my go-to websites is the National Library of Scotland maps archives. They've got lots of old Ordnance Survey maps dating back to late 1800s available to view - and a really handy side-by-side tool so you can see current maps next to the old OS maps. For an area like this (Merthyr) it's absolutely fascinating to see the changes - in the late 1800s it's just a mass of railway lines servicing the iron works https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=16.0&lat=51.73727&lon=-3.37173&layers=6&right=osm

@jaz Pretty much all that. Although I'd argue that "safer for your noggin" depends on what you're doing. I'd agree if you're sports cycling, MTBing or mixing with carsHowever if you're utility cycling (just going about your day) & have got safe infra like in enlightened countries like Holland or Denmark, then no-one wears one 'cos head injuries are very rare. If you have a standard low-speed "off" you're more likely to land on your arm or shoulder

@jaz There's also a very decent argument that if you're gonna enforce mandatory helmet use, you'd be better off doing it for occupants of vehicles as that's where by far the highest numbers of serious injuries & fatalities due to head trauma occur amongst road users.....
