Maui County Mayor: Grateful for assets provided by state and federal partners. Continuing to battle fire, using water drops to suppress fire. Thank you again for the opportunity to address you.Hawaii County Mayor: 3-5 fires (depending on how you count them). 1 is nearly contained, a 2nd has some containment and active firefighting, 3rd fire is still active. [I apologize, I'm not familiar with specific fire name spelling.]Firefighters are out there working. Our shelters are open.

Hawaii County Mayor: We appreciate all the support, so thankful for that.Our thoughts and prayers are with Maui. We're not out of the woods yet but the situation in Maui should take precedence over us. Thank you.Director Ed Sniffen (HI DoT): Horrific situation we're trying to work through. Hearts out to Maui County. Discourage travel to Maui County. Many people stayed overnight at airport. There are 4,000 tourists we're helping to leave Maui. Kudos to airport for their assistance.

Director Ed Sniffen (HI DoT): Will keep updating on our website road closures and other news. Thank you very much.James Tokioka, Dir of Bus Dev & Tourism: Nobody was prepared for this. We're communicating across govt agencies. Tourists, we ask for your patience. City buses will transport people from airport to convention ctr. It's not just for visitors! Local people have lost everything. Shelters on Maui may be full but locals also have the option to stay at the convention center on Oahu.

Journalist: About the 6 fatalities, what type of injuries did they sustain (Maui County).Maui County Mayor: We don't have that info because we only received that confirmed 6 count just before the presser. Not all injuries have been burns. Also had a firefighter who suffered smoke inhalation transported to Oahu and now in satisfactory condition.

We have been in constant communication throughout the night, and in communication with the mayors, as well.The governor is returning from Boston. He's cutting short his trip by a week. He should arrive tonight by midnight.Journalist: Question re counts re Maui property damage.Maui County Mayor: Unknown at this time. Highest priority is life safety, and then property. Because fires aren't out yet, don't have a total right now.

Lt Gov: We've communicated with White House & FEMA. FEMA will assist with assessing damage.Journalist: Why are cellular services down in Lahaina and when do we expect them to be restored.Maui County Mayor: Because of the high winds, 29 poles are down. Fiber optics were also damaged. These types of communication hardware have been damaged in the fires. Have been using radios to communicate with PD, FD & county depts. Also have some satellite phones.

Major General Hara: Working with cellular cos to bring in COWs (cellular on wheels).Journalist: Some say damage looks like a bomb went off and what assurances will be offered to residents?Maui County Mayor: We want to offer mental health (trauma) services to our community. I have not yet seen the photos because I been in back-to-back meetings since I came in this a.m. Have been told which areas have burnt to the ground, and agree this is devastating. This is a time to care for each other.

Lt Gov: Something we did yesterday was an emergency proclamation to allow governor to deploy emergency funds. We're still assessing damage and identifying additional health & safety needs. This won't be a short journey, will take weeks to months to assess damages.Other islands/cities have opened their homes & hotels to Maui residents.Major General Hara: Have recd 2 blackhawk helicopters to assist with water fire suppression, as well as 2 Chinook helicopters coordinating with the fire dept.

Journalist: What do the firefighers need on Maui and do they have enough resources?Maui County Mayor: We didn't expect this many fires simultaneously. We have drawn firefighters from the entire island, and reached out to other helpers for assistance. Have also had offers from federal park rangers and the military and other HI counties. Airport firefighters have also offered personnel and assistance, too. The high winds prevented use of helicopters yesterday but that's improved this morning.
