Tulsi Gabbard, the US Director of National Intelligence, used the same weak password on multiple accounts for years, according to WIRED.She's not alone. In my experience, the majority of people - left to their own devices - choose weak passwords or arguably *worse* re-use passwords, making it far too easy for cybercriminals to crack into accounts.

I've spent 30+ years telling people to use unique, hard-to-crack passwords on all their accounts. Sometimes it feels like you're talking to a brick wall.Just to repeat: "Director of National INTELLIGENCE". Sheesh.Read the Wired article here: https://www.wired.com/story/tulsi-gabbard-dni-weak-password/

Ford is rolling out a software patch to some of its cars. The reason? "a frozen or missing rearview camera image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash."It's crazy. Not that they're pushing out a patch, but that people need digital "smart" rear view mirrors in the first place. Regular rear view mirrors don't require software updates, they don't need to be digital, they just rely upon physics.

Over 1 million Ford Bronco, Edge, Mustang, Escape, Exoedition, F-150, and Lincoln Navigator and Nautilus vehicles in the United States are affected. If any of these cars *need* a "smart" rear view mirror, then my guess is that they weren't designed properly in the first place.More details here: https://www.theverge.com/news/675570/ford-recall-1-million-vehicles-rearview-cameras

For over a decade, AVcheck offered a convenient service: upload your suspicious file, and it would tell you which anti-virus detected itHandy, right? Especially if you’re a malware developer trying to avoid detectionThe site was careful not to share uploads with security vendors. Suspicious? Slightly.Law enforcement has now shut down AVcheck, which had been quietly enabling cybercriminals to fine-tune their malware for years.Good riddance.More details here:https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/police-takes-down-avcheck-antivirus-site-used-by-cybercriminals/

Denmark’s Ministry of Digital Government is phasing out its use of Microsoft Office.. to switch to open source alternatives like LibreOffice instead. Why? Because relying too heavily on a US tech giant for your nation’s digital infrastructure is starting to feel a bit... well, risky.Denmark's relationship with the US is under strain, following Donald Trump's clearly stated ambition to seize control of Greenland, and recent reports of increased spying by the States on Greenland and Denmark.

You can't blame Denmark for being concerned. Its government's sensitive data is nestled deep within a proprietary cloud on another country. One that is being less than friendly to you. It seems fair to ask - is this sensible?Ultimately it's a question of cost, trust, national security, and digital resilience. I would be surprised if more countries weren't considering a similar move.More info: https://www.thelocal.dk/20250610/why-denmark-wants-to-cut-use-of-microsoft-products-at-key-ministry

I don't understand how the UK government (and indeed many firms) can continue to maintain a presence on Elon Musk's deepfake porn site (formerly known as Twitter), rather than jumping ship to the likes of Mastodon and Bluesky.Their continued association with X/Twitter isn't just a bad look, it's an endorsement of a site that behaves in a disgusting, degrading way, and has been churning out sexualised images of real-life women and young girls. Is it just to avoid the wrath of Elon Musk?

At Davos a new social media platform was revealed - "W" (as in the one before "X") says it aims to counter misinformation, properly verified users, will be hosted on European 🇪🇺 servers, and have zero bots. What do you think? Are they joining the game too late? Would you sign-up? The site is currently only open to a select few testers at https://wsocial.eu

The Swiss government has ended its contract with American analytics company Palantir, after federal agencies in the country rejected Palantir at least nine times over seven years. The reason? Security concerns that should make other countries think carefully:- Risk of US intelligence gaining access to sensitive data- Potential loss of national sovereignty- Dependence upon foreign specialists in crisis situationsSwiss authorities won't touch their software with a bargepole.1/2

Meanwhile, the UK has signed contracts worth over £800 million with Palantir for NHS and Ministry of Defence systems. British MPs are now asking awkward questions about why their due diligence has reached such a different conclusion.Switzerland chose sovereignty over convenience. They chose not to risk using Palantir.Other countries should be asking themselves: if Switzerland deemed these risks unacceptable, what are we missing? What do you think?2/2
