@status Thanks for the update!Something I've been wondering: Is full text searching turned off on purpose? @mjg59 A very similar thing happened when Google introduced SafetyNet on Android.It basically rendered third party ROMs useless, as you couldn't run banking apps, metro payment apps, streaming apps, games, and so many other apps that didn't really need it.Background: https://www.androidpolice.com/safetynet-deprecated-for-play-integrity-api/(SafetyNet is currently being replaced by Play Integrity, but it's even more of the same.)What they're suggesting for the Web is much more pervasive. ☹️

@realcaseyrollins @Rii_cck Copyright those particular implementations? Yes; they're "artwork".Trademark the glyph as a logo? No; it's a UTF-8 glyph, shipped everywhere for a long time.Trademark the name "X" by itself as a software product? No; there's been decades of prior art.(I'm not a lawyer though... I have just witnessed people talk about copyright and trademarks for decades, as both a designer and developer. I might be wrong... I'm happy to be corrected by actual lawyers. 😉)

I want to like Matrix / Element, but Element might be the worst piece of software I've ever used.Nearly every day, it either hangs indefinitely or forgets my login info, or some other bug (with most being showstoppers).The UI is confusing and I have a thousand rooms that I can't get rid of that clutter everything (as I've attended conferences from the past few years in it).When it works, it's nice and all... but it rarely ever works.I really *want to* like it. 😕

Perhaps it's confused due to years of FOSDEM, GUADEC, Fedora events, and more... and it's trying to sync everything? I don't want literally a hundred or more abandonded rooms that I can't dismiss (as it gives me errors).And there's no way to reset the history either. So there's no way to fix it.Perhaps I need to use a different server or something? Sigh.

Frog is such a neat little Linux desktop app to extract text from images.You can give it an image (file selector, drag & drop) or let it take a screenshot. @nekohayo @mjg59 Pika is the way.It has an excellent interface where you don't have to know it's using Borg underneath. It supports network storage & can use local disks too.You can view snapshots in your file manager and copy individual files out if you want, just like Time Machine. (It does a fuse mount and opens it in your file manager, but you don't have to know that; it does all this in the background.)Every snapshot is standalone (so you can prune) & it's tons faster than Duplicity.

Haven't figured out how to stream @lgm #LGM — it seems absent from their website.For a conference who always talked about being aware of carbon emissions and is all about spreading awareness of Free/Libre tools for making art, it seems like a very strange omission.Especially since LGM did have streaming in years past.(...And COVID still exists, but even so, there are so many other reasons to stream conferences, especially #FOSS ones...)

@aral I agree with you that Biden is definitely horrible about this, but the only other option for the US, Trump, is not just bad on this topic too (but also for everything else).Trump said, "You’ve got to finish the problem" and later clarified that as "fully support Israel defeating, dismantling, and permanently destroying" Hamas, but that's what Israel is currently claiming (Hamas) when it's mainly bombing civilians. @boilingsteam Of the ones I bought on Steam and enjoyed enough to beat this year:- Cat Quest III (lots of fun in co-op)- Minishoot' AdventuresNon-Steam:- AstroBot- Spider-Man 2(There were other games in 2024 I bought and didn't beat yet, like Kitsune Tails and Mario & Luigi: Brothership (Switch)... and some that I beat and enjoyed from years ago, like Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster.)I guess I didn't buy so many newly-released games this year, even though I played a lot of games.

#FOSDEM does do a lot of good too, bringing people together and promoting Free Software. And there are amazing people putting together the event every year — especially the tons of volunteers spending their time and effort to make this all happen.But promoting the ideals of Free and Open Source Software is all the more reason they should really respect their audience, be inclusive, and try to be better.(People critical of FOSDEM aren't attacking it; we all want it to be better.)

There's a Quick Share app made with Libadwaita on Flathub now, called "Packet".This means you can now natively send and receive files with Android's "Quick Share", without installing anything on a phone.
