Anyway, I’d be up for hopeful, slice of life, low stakes SFF recommendations with as little violence as possible, romance or not.

I should note that most of the books mentioned above have some violence. I’m just looking for less!Becky Chambers and Celia Lake have the least.

someone’s long hair introduced itself into the mess and started tying itself in knots. There was much quiet swearing. But it’s done, at least.I neither hate untangling yarn nor enjoy it so much that I volunteer to untangle other people’s yarn as a hobby*, but I do find it satisfying. Unless there’s HAIR that doesn’t belong!*Such people exist.#yarn #FiberArts #FibreArts

Morning!Spouse and I are dredging up memories of how to deal with heat and no AC; our AC is broken and needs repair. We put box fans in a couple of open windows last night and pulled in cooler air. Now the windows are closed. We’ll cope, but the cat keeps looking at us reproachfully and sprawling across the wood floor. This makes it a day for less hot tea around here (though I did start my day as usual), but I’m still happy to offer virtual tea to all and sundry; want some? 🫖

@CarlCravens yep. I grew up in the Midwest without air conditioning at all. My father had a special “house fan” for pulling cool air through the house, which worked pretty well, but. Ugh. Sympathies.

I keep thinking about making my own bookcloth for the covers of more Coptic binding, so I guess it was more than a passing fancy. I’ve found instructions for how to do it with glue, wheat paste, or heat ‘n’ bond (iron-on stuff), and so I need to decide about that.I want to make a small notebook for my purse, and some sketchbooks for presents, and maybe another graph paper notebook.#BookBinding #notebooks #HandCrafts

The major preoccupation around here remains dealing with the heat and getting ready for the contractors who are installing new ductwork and a heat pump this coming week.Made immense progress on the cleaning yesterday, and have started working on some more today, interspersed with swatching for my new sweater. (Have done three swatches, am working on a fourth.)Am feeling encouraged. It helps that the weather is beautiful this weekend.

Here’s one of the reasons I’m glad our central AC failure is leading to us getting a heat pump: we can replace our gas furnace, too! Burning natural gas produces a lot of pollutants.https://www.nrdc.org/experts/pierre-delforge/gas-appliances-pollute-indoor-and-outdoor-air-study-shows

Whew. Yesterday was a frenzy of cleaning and organizing.Today was day one of removing the old AC and ductwork and the electrician pulling wire that’s up to code for the heat pump. They made really good progress, and hope to be done by end of day tomorrow, if nothing goes awry. So here’s hoping.(Something did go wrong today; one of the attic steps broke (it’s a ladder that pulls down from the ceiling) and spouse fixed it to be better than it was before.)

It’s time to fold some bones. Oh, wait, it’s time to use the unidentified doohickey I use as a bone folder to fold some paper. If you can identify said doohickey, I’d appreciate it. All I know is that it was in my grandmother’s house. It might be for organizing embroidery thread colors? A letter opener?Anyway, I remain curious.

@CarlCravens that’s how I use my Patreon as a creator, too. I do take suggestions from my backers on Patreon, but none of my creative content is on Patreon.

With the way things are going, I expect this is an especially good time to throw some money in your fediverse server admin’s tip jar, given the influx of new people.

I was recently reminded, and so I’ll share this with you. If you’re looking at someone’s profile and it looks empty, make sure to open it in a separate web browser tab or something, because sometimes the information that’s there hasn’t come through to your own server.Sometimes it’s still blank, but oh well! It’s being helpful for me when approving follow requests.#FediTips

I’ve been sporadically editing old blog posts, and this week’s effort involves giving the charted design for Serendipity (a decade old!) its own blog post. (And written instructions!)The technique I used for the original sample is called (among other names) knitweaving; link in next post. I’ve also drawn what the pattern might look like as an allover design.1/2#knitting #FiberArts #ChartedDesignshttps://www.gannetdesigns.com/2024/11/22/serendipity-a-charted-design-for-any-craft/
