@pagrus Right? It is controversial. There's "we've always done it this way" vs. "public trust!"I don't know if California beaches are the same but the ones here are both rip-current-prone and also very much used by people who don't swim on a regular basis, so the lifeguards get a lot of work (and there are still a fair number of fatalities every season). And there's no way most of the tiny towns (who have almost no tax revenue outside of beach tags and parking) could afford lifeguards without.

@pagrus I think part of it is that most Jersey beaches also involve boardwalks, so there's a great deal of alcohol within walking distance of a rip current. I mean, I'm sure a lot of Californians bring alcohol to the beach but the difference here is: there are a lot of businesses (and concomitant tax revenue) that rely on people coming to the beach *and spending money there* so you can't let that get too lethal.

@seachanged @pagrus In theory that's a national thing, from high tide line. I'm not sure how it interacts with beach tags, legally speaking. Maybe you can walk down from an open beach as long as you stay in the intertidal area, I dunno.

Okay can't stop wondering about beach fees vs. public trust, and it turns out: NJ has a statute making NJDEP responsible for making sure towns don't violate the public trust access, but also:https://www.monmouth.edu/uci/documents/2018/10/beach-access-report.pdf/"A town can charge beach fees to produce revenues necessary to offset legitimate beachfront related expenditures. However, if you are simply walking along the wet sand area below the mean high water line you should not be charged a fee."(operative word "should" there)

On the "French personal space" vs. "Slavic personal space" scale, I am 100% Slav (despite afaik having zero ancestry from that part of the world). 😆 (cw eye contact)

When I was a little kid, my family called vitamins "vita-mints" because one of us (I want to say my sister but maybe that's just because I have a memory of her saying it that way) misheard it like that.We had Flintstones Chewables (as did my entire generation) so what I'm saying is, I had kind of a weird impression of what "mints" encompassed.

(This thought brought to you by Poppi's decision that the vitamin bottle sounds like the cat treat jar, so it has become a morning ritual for me to take mine and then give him a treat, and today I asked him, "Are you here for your vita-mint?")

A fun law thing is that being ruled unconstitutional doesn't actually delete laws, so if the ruling is overruled they spring back. Wisconsin's 1849(!) law makes abortion a felony, no rape/incest exception. If (when...) Lawrence is repealed, the same thing is going to happen with a lot of states' "sodomy" laws, which are fairly wide-ranging. Lotta people in a lotta states will be surprised to learn that things like oral sex are illegal, even between a married couple.

(The principle in many cases was "well we can't just come out and *say* it's to make homosexuality illegal, we just would OBVIOUSLY never charge a married couple for this!" and so it only gets used against LGBT folks. And sex workers. Prosecutorial discretion is important but also kiiiiiinda biased.)

Real estate is still too expensive around here, we're just gonna buy a schooner and live at sea. https://www.yachtworld.com/yacht/1983-vagabond-52-staysail-schooner-7713893/

My sister has pointed out that if we bought this we could sail through the Panama Canal and go visit Carl's brother in the Bay Area.To be clear: I have been in a boat on salt water one (1) time. Carl has been twice. In none of those situations were we in charge of anything on the boat. The only sailing ship we've been on is Moshulu, which is a floating restaurant that that hasn't had canvas in decades. What I'm saying is: this could only end in tragedy.

@CarlCravens Run over by an Evergreen cargo ship.I did just go look at whether it came with canvas because I realized the pictures only had a diagram, no pictures of it under sail... and it does, and all the stuff is powered. So we wouldn't have to climb around on the rigging or anything, at least.
