I have all the components for the new Acrux board game prototype. Looking forward to the play testing this weekend. #Astrodon #astronomy #BoardGames

I love combining two of my main interests: galactic cartography and board games.

Very happy with the way the card deck turned out.

My Meta Quest Virtual Starship app got its first review (and it is a five star review!). You can download the app here: https://www.meta.com/en-gb/experiences/6197471476996464/#Astrodon #astronomy #GaiaMission

Identified some small glitches but otherwise I'm quite happy with this simple galactic settlement game.

Have you ever wanted to create an Orion trading empire, build a colony orbiting Naos and set up research stations around hot stars, all in less than 90 minutes? This is your game.

Based on real star data from Gaia and Hipparcos, of course.

Thanks to the play testers who gave me quite a bit of useful feedback. I've already revised the rules to add a bit more trading post competition and reprinted some cards. Trying to recruit more play testers for next weekend and then presenting the game (and posters and Virtual Starship app) at a Gaia Mission astronomy conference in September.

This is the first game I've created that looks and plays like the sort of game that you could buy in a board game shop. Can I find a publisher? Who knows ...

Play testing set up for the next two weekends followed by a presentation at an astronomy conference in Leiden. Some real momentum developing behind my new Acrux game!

I'm experimenting with using the trading posts to develop a simple galactic area control mechanism. Can you dominate the Orion sector? However I still want the rule sheet to be four pages maximum and playing time less than 90 minutes. So play testing is key.

Just got some reprinted cards. Fantastic to have a good quality playing card printer with just a two day turn around time.

To celebrate #StarTrekDay, here is a map of the major Star Trek regions overlaid on a real map of the Milky Way. Although some episodes involve long journeys, the Federation, Romulan Star Empire, Klingon Empire and so on are all located within 150 parsecs inside the Local Bubble.

This is an update of a previous map. Star Trek "sort of" takes place in the Milky Way and some writers reference real stars in what appear to be actual locations so there is enough information to create such a map.Oddly, however, Star Trek never seems to reference many major nearby objects including star clusters such as the Hyades and Coma. I keep putting up versions of this map hoping that it will inspire Star Trek writers to include more real cartography in their scripts. 🙏

This is a top down map of the galactic plane with a radius of 150 parsecs (about 500 light-years) with the galactic core to the right.

On Monday night I was lucky enough to host a group of Gaia Mission astronomers to play test my Acrux board game, which is based largely on Gaia and Hipparcos data.#GaiaMission #Astrodon #Astronomy #BoardGames

After a series of play testing events I've improved the board for the game to better distinguish the sectors, clarify the spectral types and (upon the advice of the Gaia Mission astronomers) introduce some cooler stars to better represent real star distribution.

The astronomers liked the game and were especially impressed that the board indicates the direction to the galactic centre!
