@eniko and that's in the context of this: https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php?oldid=509982Just look at that graph for 2024. We basically got the casualties of a full-scale war and nobody gives a fuck. And that doesn't even account for disability and other side-effects.

Today during a meeting it was mentioned that the front-end for Firefox' main source code repository [1] was super slow because of... AI scrapers! Surprise surprise! The team had to go through quite a bit of effort to curb the traffic. Also, can you think of something more stupid than scraping sources hosted in a version control system by scraping the web front-end?[1] https://hg.mozilla.org/

@raccoon most jurisdictions do not allow AI-generated content from being copyrighted.

If we loose contact because of defederation know that I'll follow you back as soon as possible. I'm dealing with complex and urgent issues at work and more importantly my family needs me (I won't elaborate on why or how). So this is not lack of interest on my part, it's lack of time and energy. Other things are taking precedence.

Follow up on this. I'm trying to find out what's going to happen. The instance doesn't seem to be going down in the short term contrary to some rumors. I still don't have the time to cleanup house here and find another instance but I'll try to find it if it becomes inevitable. This made me realize I'll probably move to a non-tech-oriented instance, something I've wanted to do for a while given only a part of what I post is about tech (and probably not even the majority of my posts).

FYI I'm still looking for another instance. It seems that all the connections I lost due to defederation were to mastodon.art and icosahedron.website. I care very much about the people I was following on those instances which is why I'm still looking around. I wish the new moderators here good luck but I want to be on an instance where I can follow everybody again and also one that is less focused on tech since only a part of what I talk (and care about) is tech.

I think we should use the term "machine generated" more and more when referring to the outputs of generative AI. Given how tech companies try to present "AI" as some kind of magic tool, and how they try to humanize the bots, I believe it's important to ground any discussion by pointing out that it's not much different from the output of a perl script. A perl script that needs a nuclear reactor to run and whose output is unreliable, but still just a dumb script.

I have a Lenovo ARM Windows machine and I needed an SSH client on it. Since OpenSSH has been available as a Windows component for years I figured I'd just install that. After all, why not? It will be auto-updated and is already integrated with the rest of the OS, what could go wrong. Hah.

It's been 50 minutes friends. FIFTY FUCKING MINUTES. And it's not done yet. Installing it is taking forever. The CPU has been between 30 and 50% load for the entire time. It's done several gigabytes worth of I/O. I have no idea what tf it's doing but it's not installed yet. This is a few megabytes worth of code. Almost one fucking hour and it's not done yet.

The process called "Windows Modules Installer" could be mining Bitcoin or training an LLM for what I know. What the fuck could be taking so long?

I'm going out to get some pizza. I swear that if it's not done by the time I come back I'll throw this thing out of the Window. I'd wipe it and install Linux instead but I need it to test Firefox ARM/Windows builds so I can't do that.

OK, it's done now. But seriously, think about this for a sec. It took like 90 minutes to install a piece of software which is listed as taking 7,04 MB of storage... and what are Microsoft's executives doing? LeT's pUT AI iNto nOtEpad

I moved all the articles I saved in Pocket to a self-hosted @readeck installation and I'm really satisfied with the result. Readeck has the most useful functionality Pocket lost in the last few years and is very pleasant to use.If I find some free time I'll whip my #Gentoo ebuild into shape and contribute it to the guru package repository.
