#BlackFriday #BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #BlackFathers @BigAngBlack threw out a prompt for great fathers. I don't know if my father was "great," not sure what that would mean but he was a good father. He did his best during a time when all Black men were catching hell daily but particularly Black men who had his darker complexion. He got up every day, went to work and helped my mom build a strong family.

@BootsChantilly @CatDragon @StillIRise1963 NY was the first state to eliminate the called "marital exemption" in rape laws. That happened in 1984! People v. Liberta is the name of the case. https://www.law.cornell.edu/women-and-justice/resource/people_v_liberta

@dpnash @BootsChantilly @CatDragon @StillIRise1963 I believe there are at least three states that still treat spousal rape as a less serious category.

@jonathanpeterson @venitamathias @blackmastodon@a.gup.pe @BlackMastodon@chirp.social Too scary to mention it. BLACK PEOPLE in space?! Oh no...now you are destroying the fantasy that's there's one place where Black folks can't go.

#BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #Abolition @blackmastodon I didn’t throw up a post last week because I didn’t want it to be lost among the clown show theatrics. This week’s thread is a little different but definitely on point and related. Many POCs born and raised here in the US don’t normally pay a great deal of attention to what is happening to our people in other parts of the world (my apologies if you do, I am not talking about YOU), unless we have family there. 1/8

#BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #Abolition @blackmastodon When things are bad here (OK, when are they not bad?) we can feel isolated and unsupported. But it may help you to know there are international treaties and bodies at the United Nations that specifically deal with our situation here. I mentioned one previously, CERD, when I was talking about the violent and corrupt police chief in Chicago named, John Burge. 2/8

#BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #Abolition @blackmastodon CERD stands for the Convention for the Elimination All Forms of Racial Discrimination. It was the CERD review committee that demanded the US do something about Burge and the racist and violent Chicago police. That was why Burge finally got prosecuted. The UN directed the Justice Department to report back on what they were doing about him. The UN also has a treaty on discrimination. against women, CEDAW. 3/8

#BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #Abolition @blackmastodon But the UN entity I want to bring to your attention today is the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent. It exists to hear about conditions of safety and quality of life for people of African descent. It also serves as an advisory group to the Human Rights Council. You can read about the Permanent Forum here: https://www.ohchr.org/en/permanent-forum-people-african-descent 4/8

#BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #Abolition @blackmastodon Today I attended a meeting entitled ā€œ Rebuilding A Pan African Global Policy Agendaā€ sponsored by AdNA (Advocacy Network for Africa) where the first part of findings and conclusions from of Forums’ meetings were discussed. There will be two more sessions, one in October and one in November. Many of the issues I discuss in the abolition thread were discussed as part of the Forum’s preliminary research. 5/8

#BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #Abolition @blackmastodon State terror against People of African descent, lack of resources devoted to health and safety of our communities, reparations and the GLOBAL movement supporting them. You may have seen recently Guyana, and Barbados said they were due reparations. And the situation of Haiti was discussed in the context of reparations. The need for mental health services to address generational trauma was also raised. 6/8

#BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #Abolition @blackmastodon The speakers stressed that these are truly global issues caused by colonialism and predatory capitalistic systems. We are not in this fight by ourselves although it may seem so at times. Here’s the link for AdNA is you want to check out their work or learn how you can become part of a Pan African movement. https://adnaubuntu.com/ On Guyana :https://adnaubuntu.com/ 7/8

I encourage all of you to become more knowledgeable about the diasporic effort to bring dignity and justice to our people, no matter where we are located, even if it’s here. 8/8If @blackmastodon would like me to post more international stuff, let me know.

@BlackAzizAnansi Listen, we have good epidemiologists, immunologists, and virologists in our area. They all said the same thing. Do a risk assessment whenever you are out and about. This should be a normal part of your routine now. It will keep you from feeling like you're going to crack. Keep needed supplies in every bag or briefcase, and go on with your life.

@venitamathias @BigAngBlack @blackmastodon@a.gup.pe @BlackMastodon@chirp.social Also...and I haven't seen the documentary - I only read his column when he first wrote about it and have talked to him when he visited UF - all Black people in America could move to the south but unless gerrymandering is ended, the political structures will remain the same. It's not like the Black people who already live there don't know what to do.

@venitamathias @BigAngBlack @blackmastodon@a.gup.pe @BlackMastodon@chirp.social UGH! Now I'm riled up because this "move to the south" thing once again puts the onus on Black folks for carrying white America. Here's a radical thought: How about droves of progressive White folks move to the south to gerrymandered districts and turn them over. How about that?! Let some White folks take responsibility for ending their relatives chicanery..... And lets see how long they remain "progressive." 😔

@grammargirl This squares well with my experience teaching in the hell state that is Florida. One in 5 American adults is illiterate (not just Florida). Another 1 in 5 is functionally illiterate. So we are already at 2 in 5 that cannot read.
