Problems persist this morning. We continue to intervene, manually blocking particularly active nodes and ASNs involved in the present DDoS. We are also9 stopping and restarting things as needed to allow processing of mailing list traffic. The webserver (especially) for lists will likely continue to be up-and-down today and though the weekend.

www.gnu.org was down for several hours due to the OS problem. It is back now and expected to be stable. lists.gnu.org website is largely inaccessible. Mailing lists emails are likely unaffected. We are investigating and will post another update when we know more.

lists.gnu.org is back up. It was getting overwhelmed with bot traffic. We put some new mitigations are in place which are working. Those mitigations may need more tuning: we will be monitoring it.

FYI, instead of ftp.gnu.org, you can use the generic URLs https://ftpmirror.gnu.org and http://ftpmirror.gnu.org to automatically choose a nearby and up-to-date mirror. More info at: https://www.gnu.org/prep/ftp.en.html

Today we banned many addresses that appeared to be part of CI/CD farms at least until the service is healthy once more. If you are running CI/CD against our limited resources, please help us out by using local cache, our mirror network, or host your own mirror and join our mirror network. Customize your user-agent string with contact information. These addresses should not need to download the same resources hundreds of times. No one's CI/CD is more important than everyone else's connection.

This morning the team is addressing DDoS targeting gnu.org, lists, Savannah hosted version control, and other services. Other services may be slower as a result of network saturation. Please continue to report prolonged issues on Libera.Chat IRC in #fsfsys or via mail to fsfsys@fsf.org. Thanks in advance for your patience and support.

@davisr the HTML front-ends for git are migrated from Savannah central hosts to a volunteer run mirrors network. We are working on migrating other similar (read-only) features out from the FSF's network also. Generally, this seems to be helping spread out the effects of the DDoS. I would, personally, see reducing/removing services as a last choice but I see no argument that is a valid option to consider. Thanks for the suggestion. -corwin

We seem to be experiencing an occasion of success vs the ongoing DDoS against the FSF network today. Patterns in abusive traffic change therefor it is unclear if will be long-term progress in our 17+ month battle with very high volumes of abusive (mostly crawler/scraper presenting) traffic.Kudos to FSF staff member @thomzane for the recent traffic patterns analysis techniques and other hardening measures which appear to be proving effective so far this morning.

lists.gnu.org website is down, but sending & receiving email to mailing lists is working fine. Millions of bots are keeping the website offline. Some emails got delayed over the last day or so because the web server was not leaving enough resources for the email processing programs. We are leaving the web server mostly offline for now and any delayed emails will be sent out in the next few hours. It might take a day or so to get the website working well again.
