@futurebird @th @SnoopJ @regehr @dan @va2lam @holly I love my rice cooker. It is >15 years old and simple but works perfectly every time. I highly recommend gifting one to anyone who asks what to get someone who is moving out. (I've even made coffee in mine by putting the little Italian coffe-maker in it.)

@futurebird I don't know what it's called but I like to curate what the algo serves me and so I make a point of telling it to not show me this type of content again. Same with the "Fun Fact!" guys that then have nothing interesting to share, or the videos that is just someone watching someone else's video (often with no comment or anything!). I also make a point of liking any video of the type I'd like to see more of.

“When the AI provided an incorrect result, researchers found inexperienced and moderately experienced radiologists dropped their cancer-detecting accuracy from around 80% to about 22%. Very experienced radiologists’ accuracy dropped from nearly 80% to 45%.”https://www.brainfacts.org/neuroscience-in-society/tech-and-the-brain/2024/why-ai-can-push-you-to-make-the-wrong-decision-at-work-090324

@futurebird my favorite thing I learned about silverfish only recently is before silverfish reproduce, they carry out a ritual involving three phases, which may last over half an hour! They do a little dance. I think that is so cute and cool.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silverfish#Reproduction_and_life_cycle

@futurebird i'd have to get a smallpox vaccine and a tuberculosis vaccine first. And I need to know if I can take some antibiotics with me. Oh... and can I choose the year of Ancient Rome I'm vacationing in?Other than that I think I'd handle it like any trip: eat only cooked things or things I can peel.

@futurebird I am reminded of a scene in Absolutely Fabulous where Edina asks her daughter why she is wearing those horrible trousers and Saffron answers "You got me these!" and Edina counters with "Well, how do you make them look so frumpy?"And with your thread I now understand: it is the lack of make-up and the *unintentional* messiness of the hair that makes her look frumpy.

@futurebird I remember riding the NY subway in the 90s and when I returned in the 2010s and also in 2022 it felt like a huge change had happened. It felt so much more boring and safer. And in 1985 my parents would take the subway in NYC with me (4) and my sister (2). They said the only time they were ever attacked was by a bunch of teenagers throwing oranges at everybody.I think you're right: higher ridership makes it safer for everyone.

@futurebird Because they want to retain your attention (or grab it, if you've just switched the telly on) but also want to sound authoritative and in control.here's a video on how influencers change the way they talk to grab your attention:https://www.youtube.com/shorts/XFqnwn0cLhE

@futurebird in Germany they don't traditionally recommend flu shots to anybody under 65.When my children started going to daycare and later to school we would get the flu each year and each year we were miserable (I was sick for 3 weeks in 2018). We now get a flu shot and a Covid shot each year. However, it is at the discretion of the pediatrician, and each year I'm just waiting for the clinic we go to to simply refuse to give them to us.Missing school disrupts learning and affects grades.

@bmi Wohin voran?

@futurebird I love it! It sounds exactly like the kind of book someone wrote about their hyperfixation or special interest. It is that 45-90 minute impromptu lecture some people will give if you get them started in book form.

@futurebird @eseubert which is why I appreciate the child-free-by-choice people who are still interested in having children in their lives. The tías and tíos that are also important in showing children that there are other ways of being a happy adult than the way their parents are.

@futurebird @xeroxerox bees use propolis (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propolis#Composition) in all the small crevices that they can't fit through. It has antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties.

@futurebird @albertcardona I once read that carrying a small screwdriver with you will scare the machines into doing what you want them to.I just bing an "I am not afraid of taking you apart" energy to the machine; I also cuss at printers when they've misbehaved for someone else. It works for me.

@futurebird we have a TV because the neighbors bought a new one and left the old one in the basement. We asked if we could take it and they said yes. It is not connected to cable or satellite or such. It is connected to a computer and keyboard and we watch things in the internet mediathek of German public television... so football /soccer games and documentaries. We do not use it for surfing the web or similar. It is bigger than our monitors.

@futurebird I like that idea a lot!I'm going to drop this into the compost heap of the plan where it can ferment with the rest: You could also not paint it one block of color... instead maybe do a geometrical pattern, or give it "animal print" but in the color of your choice, or even two colors in an organic looking pattern or a strict organized pattern?
