@mekkaokereke I don't see any inkling of the stop using fossil fuels part. Our fossil fuel consumption hasn't peaked yet.

@mekkaokereke Meanwhile, China brought 47.4GW of *new* coal fired electric generation online last year. We give them kudos for having installed more solar capacity than the rest of the world (217GW!), but it's not enough to satisfy even just the growth in their demand. Average lifespan of a coal plant is 46 years, so it's still plausible they'll shut down by 2060, but to be on track they have to build way more carbon-neutral generation capacity than their demand growth from here on out. Which would mean a peak this year, not 6 years from now.

All of my follows on tech.lgbt somehow got removed. Not sure what would cause that, but folks there still show as following me. Not sure what's going on, but instead of re-following folks I'm just gonna go ahead and remove all my followers there. Feel free to re-follow once you've moved to an instance not run by racists.

Was trying to figure out how to protect stuff that's plugged into the wall from geomagnetic storms and realized I can just subscribe to geomagnetic storm alerts and unplug them before one hits.Doesn't help for HEMP except maybe for the E3 component, but that's just a matter of keeping my Baofeng HT and a shortwave radio and spare batteries in a foil-wrapped cardboard box inside a cardboard box inside a galvanized bucket with a tight-fitting lid.

@aral I love how when Israel blew past Biden's deadline for improving aid to Gaza his only response was to reiterate his steadfast support for them.We now know exactly who he and the Democrats are.

@SpaceLifeForm Phone number is only used for the initial authentication. The safety number is supposed to help catch if someone's account gets hijacked, but nobody really pays attention to that, so there's no substitute for setting a password.Even if someone were to manage to hijack your account with a SIM swapping attack or something, they wouldn't get any of your chat history. I think they do get your contacts, though.@thegibson

How come no mainstream media seems to have picked up on the fact that the photos the NYPD (ACAB) have released show guys in two different jackets? Seems like they're just finding other surveillance footage of people who vaguely look like the shooter. This is why mass surveillance is bad: it enables fishing expeditions like this and dramatically increases the chance innocent people will end up getting charged with crimes just because they happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time wearing the wrong thing.

No article even seems to show the different sets of photos together. They just focus on the "unmasked" photos with a guy wearing an obviously different jacket than the guy in the "masked" photos.

I suppose it's remotely possible that these are the same person, but by what means could anyone possibly conclude that they were? They have nothing in common.

The great filter: the intelligence level necessary to wipe out the species is significantly lower than the intelligence level necessary to not wipe out the species.

There is a striking parallel between these "freedom cities" and the "fortress cities" some fascist was predicting on John Robb's Discord. The idea is that the wealthy and their slaves will retreat behind walls in order to protect them from the people whose lives will get continually worse as civilization collapses. And given the ~20% true un(der)employment rate in the US and skyrocketing home prices, there will be plenty of incentive to go *be* a slave in one of these cities. Never mind that you have no protection if you are fired, and especially if you quit. At least people will have something *today*.

The article talks about scrip and points out that it's illegal, but that doesn't stop it from being used anyway. US tech widely pays its workers in scrip called "Restricted Stock Units" or "stock options". It can be more than half of a worker's compensation.

The flaw in at least the *fortress* city idea is that it's nearly impossible to make a city self-sufficient, as walled cities throughout the ages have learned the hard way. A city is only as secure as its supply lines.

Dark patterns are part of the shift of capitalism from profits to rents: get people to pay for things because of inertia or because they're not paying enough attention rather than by providing anything of value.Capitalism provides less value at a higher price (in labor) every year. This used to be partially offset by improvements in technology, but tech has leveled off. AI provides next to zero value at tremendous cost.
