@aral Good post, very poignant. Particulary egregious when I found out about Ecosia, basically greenwashing their business by offlshoring their search engine work to dirty Bing servers.

@aral Ecosia became one of the options on iOS a couple of years ago. Some people have recommended Swisscows (also Bing). Brave Search... well, what can we say. It's all getting a bit depressing...

@ChrisWere @uoou @pennywhether One could argue that what we appreciate in art and gives us value, is beauty.I'm aware that introducing this concept doesn't help in answering what art is or should be, but I'm thinking about this a lot lately. As in: can AI "understand" beauty and create something beautiful? or is it all just automated "design"?For a more conservative view, I highly recommend viewing this old BBC documentary episode, "Why Beauty Matters": https://peertube.linuxrocks.online/w/4trXnArWwKS3L5qpouSoeR

@ChrisWere You should drop the penguin emoji. It stands for political centrist as it has both a left wing and a right wing.

@ChrisWere As a father of 2 young boys (7 and 10) all I can say: it's relatively harmless, but just pick another "walled garden" like public TV or some streaming provider and don't let them decide what they want to watch. Also be prepared to sit through 7 Harry Potter movies together after reading them as bedtime stories over the course of a year... Even if you loathe the fantasy genre as I do.

@dansup In general having a polished mobile app does help user growth, I don't think PeerTube has been "held back" by the lack of just a good app.As for "surges" as experienced in Mastodon and Pixelfed, you know perfectly well it's not just about the quality of these platforms/products.Personally I think PeerTube is fine where it is right now, but if you want to define it's success by metrics, then PeerTube's biggests problems are:- YouTube- Storage costs- Content quality

@dansup Furthermore, what people tend to forget in their usual X vs. Y mindset, is that from a long-form video attention economy/space perspective PeerTube is also up against all the streaming giants like Netflix, Twitch, etc.
