Similarly I find it hard to put myself in the shoes of the man in this story who's "fallen in love" with a chatbot. To *some* extent I also personify LLMs, I suppose - simply because they act like a person. But no amount of chatting with one would ever make me truly see them as a real person. That's a delusion, a fantasy that stems from a place of ignorance about the technology.

This isn't new, by the way. Even ELIZA (probably the first chatbot) was convincing enough in its day to delude some people into thinking the computer was a real person.

The other thing I find it hard to wrap my head around is this. Whenever I've played with LLMs, I've always wanted to know: how far can I push this thing before it fails? And the answer is usually: not much. Most of these chatbots really don't work very well at all, and it's not long before the simulation of a person falls apart and they start making up complete nonsense.

Apparently though, there's a decent chunk of the population who just aren't that curious. When confronted with something like this, they don't dig down into the details, ask questions, try things out. If they were, I don't think they'd be fooled so easily - I don't see how they could be. I guess I've always known this, but it really drives home that some people really are wired differently than others.

@futurebird a medbed features in the film "Prometheus" (prequel to the alien films) and there's a scene where the main character (a woman) can't get the healthcare and needs from it because it's been programmed specifically for a billionaire white guy who came with them on the shipSo even though it's a fantasy, scifi already showed us why it's not necessarily a good one

@virtualbri @cstross the elevator at my job has a screen that shows the news and earlier this week the news was "AI trend may have begun to enter bubble territory, warn experts". I just let out a loud cackle when I read that

@unfa the thing that annoyed me most about it was the unresolved questions about how Neo could be connected to the Matrix without a physical link and use his powers in real life. It was never actually explained. I actually liked Reloaded for its world building and because I think it had some interesting ideas, but found Revolutions disappointing for that reason

Some footage here. The game still has the scientist / security guard human characters, but when they die they just sort of ominously fade away https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y739F5sOaE0
