       Think you’re cold? The scientists on top of Mount Washington have -37F with gusts up to 127 mph and -95F wind chills right now. And the sun isn’t even down. https://www.mountwashington.org/experience-the-weather/current-summit-conditions.aspx

       @CitizenWald It’s 6 in Murmansk at 2am. So that’s pretty cold. https://weather.com/weather/tenday/l/Kildinstroy+Murmansk+Russia?canonicalCityId=4a0494d1dc034baaf57580362b1ba036ad7d0b5f74297f38b4d0d32f210833bc

       @CitizenWald Definitely not in Murmansk. Safe and sound in Hartford (7°F).

       I am constantly filling out Doodle polls and constantly double or triple booking. Does anyone have a good system for managing calendar holds?

       The U.S. doesn’t have a daylight savings problem. It has a time zones problem. Detroit and Boston (12° longitude apart) have as much business being in the same time zone as Denver and San Diego (also 12° apart). Put the far eastern seaboard on Atlantic time, get rid of seasonal time changes, and all will be well.

       New York will be an hour closer to European markets, New England will keep its summer evenings (rather than dealing with a 3:30 a.m. daybreak), and Marco Rubio will satisfy his campaign donors in the golf industry.

       The whole cottage industry of journalists trying to trick ChatGPT into making mistakes for headlines is an epic waste of energy. All they’re revealing are isolated exceptions that only prove the rule: that ChatGPT is really good. The story isn’t the mistakes. The story is how hard they have to work to get the AI to make one.

       @CitizenWald I don’t mean “good” in any moral sense. Just technically, it’s very good at writing almost anything but the most fidgety things.

       Here are statements I agree with:- LLMs are not really “intelligent”- Standardized tests are not a measure of intelligence - LLMs make lots of mistakes - The tech industry cannot be trusted - Technology reproduces inequity- The Silicon Valley hype cycle is tiresome- Engineers do not have the expertise to speak to humanistic questions- Text and writing are two different things - Image creation and art are two different things - LLMs cannot tell truths- LLMs are a BIG F’ING DEAL and suggesting they’re not, or hoping they won’t be, on the basis of any of the above will land us in real trouble.

       If there’s anything we should have learned from the past 25 years of the history of the internet it’s that academics “calling bullshit” is not a plan for dealing with unwanted technology outcomes

       @TedUnderwood Unbelievably bad. The web app is a *little* better than the mobile app.

       I worry that the use of the term “AI hype cycle” isn’t doing the work its proponents think it is. My understanding is that those proponents hope the term will help people see through the breathless predictions of corporate interests and focus instead on harms they’re perpetrating in the present. I worry, however, that it reads, to the casual observer, as “nothing to see here.”Surely that’s not the outcome we want.

       “But we are not actually talking about the facts or data of higher education. If we were, there might be more articles about how accounting majors are down or even glancing attention paid to the National Survey of Student Engagement’s findings that the most popular college major—business—often fails to deliver anything resembling an education to the students who’ve chosen it.”https://www.nybooks.com/online/2023/04/02/letter-from-an-english-department-on-the-brink/

       Question: Has anybody from the U.S. government offered Canada any help in fighting these fires? Seems like bringing some of our resources to bear on this would be good for everybody?
