For all the people who still use Freenode, maybe look into the recent legal and operational takeover: https://www.kline.sh I don't fool myself about the security of IRC but it's still sad and concerning to see this happen.

@LinuxLounge it is super OK. I tend to use it the way I'd drop the name of my usual supermarket; not always relevant unless you explain why your supermarket does / does not have a particular item/service.

https://wayforward.archive.org The Internet Archive is looking "forward" to 2046, and if we'll be able to access correct information anonymously at all... They even have an #EmpoweringLibraries campaign which I'm very grateful for. Most people have no idea how libraries' rights to share information have eroded in the digital age due to lobbying of big companies in politics and beyond.

@Zach777 It's a great conversation starter alright. What will be normalized in the future? Currently it's a possibility for Kindle readers that Amazon may delete (bought) books from their hardware. Amazon does it because they can, and we allow it because most of us don't understand what's going on.

@stux if you live in an apartment with other people check if other people are not accidentally running a dryer/central heating on your net. Kill-a-wats are also very useful and help with calculations so you know exactly what you use and what sort of surplus you're looking for.

@EU_Commission The fact that you want to erode kids' privacy to 'help' them shows you don't want people to know that most kids are abused at home, not online, by people they know, in environments set up for them to fail. What you're doing right now is set up an online environment where they will get abused again in the future. You need to do the work where it matters, with families and kids. And not online first.

@mike I'm pretty sure you're mostly talking to fellow paranoiacs :ac_greetings: but I agree. I don't think their shenanigans are in the standard necessarily (though it should be verified) but definitely in the implementations. Implementation is where the wiggle room is, are easy to excuse as a simple error, "bad defaults" etc... And as the article states, NSA is sitting on better crypto, would be weird if they weren't.

@miekeroth @Underwatersomething @nina Mieke, Nina is, I feel, definitely misrepresenting herself by posting about Spinster from her Neenster-account, she is an active mod and self proclaimed "based as fuck TERF host" on Spinster. So she might not be technically wrong but the content from that instance is nothing I want in my feed. My instance blocks Spinster because of their TERF material and in doing that protects both me and my instance-mates.
