Do universities, which are supposed to engender higher values of societies, realize the proprietary software creep that is woven deep into their institution?

@xerz Things haven't kicked off yet over on my side, but I suspect it will be the same deal here."Free Software" more like "Go start a project or have major contributions (to probably an in-house software) as assigned work".

@tuxcrafting Imagine I told someone writing a kernel in a type-safe language that the most mission-critical pieces of system software on the Earth is written in C.They wouldn't believe it, right? Yeah, nobody would do that! How could you not have automatic checks for overflow??

:flan_book:My copy of K&R is so not-crisp, it might as well be a bootleg photocopy. Was `troff` like this? Or is it just my copy?

@tuxcrafting I mean, you could achieve that with (a subset) of any of these.

@paul The good thing about RPi is how there is a high degree of inter-compatibility. Older models could be used in education forever.Community never seems to force-push the newer hardware either. People care about older models. This is something that could not have been achieved if RPi Foundation were to jump ships from Broadcom. With the more extensive reverse engineering on the horizon, FOSS RPi stack isn't entirely hopeless.
