@futurebird I think fired clay tablets might be the most reliable way to preserve half-baked thoughts for future societies.

@futurebird "The Line" is what you get when a guy at a party has a weird half-baked idea, but that guy is also a despotic oil tycoon so he can pay lots of people to tell him that it's a good idea that makes a lot of sense.

@futurebird wait what about a model house that is too small for the ants to fit inside? is that still a house for ants or does it become a house for smaller arthropods

@futurebird maybe they're used if you need to give 100 sealed letters to someone and you need them to open them in a particular order.

@liferstate @futurebird there should be one of those airplane magazines that tries to sell expensive nonsense, but all the expensive nonsense would only ever be used by wealthy recluses who need to plan elaborate cross-country treasure hunts.

@futurebird (the instructions are just hints for an adventure game that you beat but your friend didn't, and the hints are given in sealed letters in case you have a heart attack but still need to help them solve the soup cans).

@futurebird the weird tank advert kind of makes me want a hot tub, so maybe one of the uses is "hot tub marketing"

@futurebird the "See Also" links for "Isolation Tank" on wikipedia are also a land of contrasts: Dark retreat Mindfulness Prisoner's cinema Psychedelic experience Sleep podDark Retreat is apparently a Buddhist thing but sounds way more nightmarish than it is.

@futurebird maybe the artist looked at a science-fiction ant person as a reference instead of an actual ant.

@futurebird my first thought was "a rubber duck" because it matches my avatar and I could replace it with a pottery duck if this is a pre-rubber fantasy society. But I don't know if either of those things would make a good wax seal impression for a letter, so really I'd probably just get some clay and bake some kind of customized cylinder seal.

@futurebird I'll use the face of a die then. I got a pair of novelty dice that you roll to get a fantasy TTRPG alignment; the "Neutral" alignment face has a scale by it and the word "neutral". I'll use that, but upside-down.

@futurebird thinking too much about this question, I think a better choice would be an ordinary 6-sided die, because were I caught by the secret police with one it would be less suspicious.I think I'd use the 3-side to mark the wax three times at 120 degree angles, making a pattern of nine dots in three rows, so it would be less than obvious that a die was used to make the symbol.1/2

@futurebird ... of course by the time I had that idea all the documents would have already shipped, and historians would later be scratching their heads at why the Neutral Revolutionary Front called themselves that and also used an upside-down scale as their symbol.2/2
