@paul @shadowfacts Mastoot / @libei is fetching a list of known Mastodon instances I think. I thought that was a clever solution!

Looks like the German government is going all in on Mastodon. Here’s the 5 highest federal courts announcing their press releases to appear on it from today.https://social.bund.de/@DS_Stiftung/109947762847284850

I’ve been testing Nova as a replacement for VSCode over the last few weeks. I like it a lot for its native feel but what’s quite sad is that the multi-cursor editing performance is much, much worse.I was editing a 4000 line file with a cursor on each line and it’d take 5ish seconds for each key press to take effect. VSCode updated in maybe half a second. Noticeably slower than normal editing but still fine.Bit unfortunate that the native app fared so much worse here 😞

@markmalstrom @Migueldeicaza I should run some tests. I believe Xcode is also quite bad at this but there must be native editors that do better!

@markmalstrom @Migueldeicaza So I've gone ahead and run a little test: A plain text file with 5k lines of “1234567890”, a multi-cursor at the start of each line, pressing “.” to insert a period, (hand-)measuring the time it takes to appear:VSCode, Sublime<<1s 🚀Nova2s🤔Textmate5s😓Xcode18s🥵Any other editors supporting multi-cursor I could test this with?

@tedu It shouldn’t redownload dependencies, they’re cached elsewhere.

Regarding “back to the office”: Why is the commute the employee’s burden anyway? Make it part of the work time and have at it requiring people to come to the office. Three hours commute? You get 5 hours in the office.Employees are available immediately at home but if they’ve required in the office, the clock starts when they leave home. You rent their time, your choice to spend it on travel.

It's interesting how some people's immediate response is: this will make housing and traffic worse, because employers will try to minimise commute time. They do that already, by forcing people to offices, making them optimise for short commutes on their own. There's another way to get to a zero commute, it's not to commute.

Another interesting theme: “People would just choose to commute longer so they have to work less.”Do I have news for you: people who don't want to work will find ways not to work. If presence is your way of checking productivity you're in for a rough time no matter your model.

Operating •and• developing Mastodon on this budget is nothing short of amazing. It’s also unsustainable and we should make sure we don’t just pay for our third party Mastodon clients but donate to the core project.https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2023/10/annual-report-2022

@mergesort I had a similar experience recently with Duolingo’s “Max” mode, which does little AI guided conversations. It gives a topic but then lets you talk freely. It worked really well.I was able to speak conversationally without trying to match a certain expected response and it corrected and explained idioms I misused.I still went and double checked what it told me but this is an area where I think LLMs are really going to shine. Language patterns are their thing.

This keeps popping up, in particular now that we go through the adoption of the #DMA.Of course companies are going to try and do Taekwondo moves in the face of regulations. Don’t let yourself be flung around.

“MacBooks turned out to be the perfect target for the attack, because it works best when you have a very reflective surface to use as the laser target – and the Apple logo on the back of a MacBook screen has an almost mirror-like finish.”People who plaster their MacBooks with stickers have deployed physical firewalls 👌https://mastodon.online/@9to5Mac/112926689513444383
