OK, so you know the so-called "source code leak" from Rabbit for the #r1 last week? It wasn't a real leak, but what it showed was different than what I was expecting. So Rabbit Hole, the way you configure your R1 -- it only works on desktops, which I thought was rather odd. And then I went to manage my connection and I figured out why. This whole thing is a fucking VNC session in the web browser served as if it is a modal login

So when you go to https://hole.rabbit.tech for your configuration, that i a proper web app. But look at what happens when you click on one of the connect buttons. A VNC session opens up. Notice the URL is /uber-vnc

The VNC doesn’t have clipboard access and can't access any of your extensions -- this is how I first discovered this (I wasn't looking at the URL at first). So logging into your account takes some effort. Look at this button here. This is what you need to use to pass a password into this VNC.

The whole process is also horribly slow, even though it is trying to trick the user into thinking it is just a normal modal Uber/DoorDash/Spotify login window. I'll add a video in a second

The problem with the iPad as as many have pointed out is that the software hampers what it can do unless you’re willing to contort yourself into a very specific workflow. For most casual users those limitations aren’t an issue and the advantages of the form factor outweigh the deficits. But when you charge MBPro money for a device the trade-offs sting. As @jsnell says, the best solution would be to just let us virtualize macOS on an iPad Pro when using it in certain modes https://sixcolors.com/post/2024/05/the-ipad-pro-is-no-longer-the-future-so-whats-next/

@john @jsnell honestly, Apple loves to ignore these kinds of edge cases on the preposition that every app will use only Apple frameworks and APIs so I don’t think it would be a blocker at all. The reality would be that some apps might only work in one mode or the other. And as I said, default to iPadOS. Make that the primary. But for Pro users on a Pro device with connected accessories, allow macOS mode to work.

@john @jsnell I mean, virtualization allows pass-through access to network and storage components. So you’d just approve permissions to access stuff stored locally to your iPad. But in the case of Procreate, the default for both Mac and iOS of those is iCloud anyway. And the VM wouldn’t be using a separate storage device. Again, there might be *some* edge cases and limitations but that’s why this would be an option, not the only solution.

Great post from @ernie on what we shouldn't have to do, but given what happened to The Hairpin and TUAW and whatnot, we probably should https://tedium.co/2024/07/10/websites-domains-spam-prevention/

A wonderful coworker found the most “me” toilet seat of all time. I think it’s too expensive for me to buy but I dream of shitting on old tech this way. https://www.baileyhikawa.com/products/2gtrash-phones-toilet-seat

I posted this to Twitter and it doesn’t really apply to Mastodon b/c Mastodon (also true of Threads) but the sentiment remains true:The most reassuring thing about all of this for me is that finally FINALLY I’m seeing good memes on the timeline about the presumptive dem nominee! The Kamala memes have been getting good for a few weeks but are excellent today. I am serious when I say we need people to be inspired to shitpost if we want anyone to show up and vote.

There are no media people on Mastodon and normally that’s fine but on nights like tonight, it really shows how much we’ve missed as we’ve all had to spread to different platforms.

OK, this is wild. Apple is releasing a $450 Apple Music coffee table book (a la the $300 Designed by Apple book I still regret not buying) and the price isn’t what is making me laugh. It’s that it’s for Apple’s truly unhinged 100 Albums of All Time list. It’s not a good list! The list is very, very bad! I cannot imagine making such a beautiful book for such a terrible list! h/t @parkerortolani https://www.assouline.com/products/apple-music

Kinda wild Apple will kick ICEBlock out of the App Store on safety grounds but the Saudi government app that lets men track women (their “property”) and control their travel is fully allowed even after the Human Rights Watch AND members of the Senate begged them to ban it.
