Twitter reinstates the “Official” badge (i.e. basically what the Blue badge used to be) after a surge of fake accounts that abused users into thinking they were authentic by simply paying the $8 fee. Who could have guessed!? 🤷🏻‍♂️https://www.reuters.com/technology/musk-says-his-companies-will-remain-well-positioned-2023-2022-11-11/

To sum up: At this point, the Grey check is the new Blue check, “Official” is the new “Verified”, Blue check now signals premium paying users. Twitter revolution is now.

@shaman Brilliant, though I'd be mildly concerned about the limits of “Pesticide Safe” (which obviously is not to be confused with “Pesticide Free”).

Intriguing how everyone's aware by now that Threads can't be launched in the EU because it is not compliant with privacy rules, but no one outside the EU takes the clue that Meta keeps sucking every scrap of users' digital footprint and that sensible users (not just the European Commission), should deem this utterly unacceptable and stop using any of Meta's services.#Threads #Meta @EU_Commission #privacy #GDPR

I am floored and fascinated by the near-literary quality of many of the descriptions of images that people carefully craft when appending pictures to their posts on Mastodon. Some of them will reveal a detail that had escaped my attention. Others will help me understand a subtle joke I had missed. Others still are true poems. ALT are their own microblogging world that reveals itself as you hover on a picture. And I hover, and hover.#AltText #inclusivity #Mastodon #netiquette #tootiquette

“The US library system, once the best in the world, faces death by a thousand cuts,” writes @brewsterkahle founder of @internetarchive. “The traditional practice of libraries is to buy or acquire published materials, preserve and catalog them, and lend them widely and confidentially. (…) But now, in the digital age, every one of these functions has been denied to libraries, or recently even declared illegal in the United States.”https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/oct/09/us-library-system-attack-digital-licensing#Libraries #books @bookstodon

Online shopping is such a hot mess. Take Amazon: the price of a product I'm looking for varies by more than *25%* betw. Amazon.nl & Amazon.fr (and every shades of grey in other countries). Same product exactly, same brand and reference. It makes every purchase a time-consuming, anxiety-provoking, uncertain experience. That's yet another layer of #enshittification that's utterly upsetting and insufficiently discussed. And yet, Amazon brags that “1 account - all of Europe.”Paging @pluralistic !

@jeppe @pluralistic Fair point: my personal ethics is to seek all other avenues and to only turn to Amazon if what I need is significantly less expensive or if I just can't find it anywhere else (safely). This includes local brick and mortar shops where too often the answer is "sorry, we don't sell that, and no, we can't order it."

@tomjennings @jeppe @pluralistic I get your point. I make it a goal to prefer local, honest, respectful outlets, but we lack ressources to find them (because we can't trust search engines or AI). I really miss the “directories” and the “rings” of the early days of the internet. They were human-made, based on quality and experience, and could be trusted. Imagine an ethical directory of online shopping sites? It'd be instant success cause so many people are looking for decent alternatives.
