@textfiles I’m only 30 pages in already. I absolutely agree. So interesting reading about someone whose journey paralleled my own back in the 80s but who actually had it considerably harder than I did. Everything is relative. It can be hard to remember that at times but it’s important.

@jimsalter and a gaggle of others have been saying this for years, but it's still super interesting to see an actual analysis of how GOOG is making independent email as close to impossible as it can manage:http://www.igregious.com/2023/03/gmail-is-breaking-email.html

So I'm installing #nixos on my home desktop.Seems like the perfect mad platform for a software mad scientist's lab :) Looking forward to embracing the adventure! :)

Welp, I am either not smart enough or do not have the necessary days to headbang against NixOS to leverage its amazing cosmic power properly.LOTS of potential there. This is one of those moments where I wish I were retired so I could say "I'm going to devote the next few months to making their documentation GREAT!".Someday :) For now I caved and just installed @manjarolinux KDE which let me get all my apps and configurations up and running in minutes.

Tried them for the last month or so and I DO NOT LIKE vertical browser tabs. They fix a problem I never have: I keep at most 5-7 tabs open at once, and mostly for work I only keep 2-4.The vertical tabs with the flappy auto-hide behavior just force me to fuss with the mouse more and also mean I basically lose the ability to just glance up and then Cmd-<number> to access what I want. You folks who keep 500 tabs open must love them though :)

Partially blind guy here with an #a11y PSA:I'm seing a trend away from "Text Size" sliders or old fashioned font dialogs and towards a few set choices "Default", "Large","Larger", etc. This is a HUGE step backwards. Your 'larger' is *never* large enough for my crazy busted eyeballs when I'm using my 34" monitor. If you must do this, please be sure to add "Largest" and even "ZOMG ARE YOU SERIOUS LARGE" options. Some of us REALLY need them, even if it seems insane to you.

@d6 I think Capitalism maintains critical infrastructure because the drugs I take that keep my body from expunging all the salt and thus water from my blood keep me alive and are manufactured by a tiny number of pharma firms for a total audience of maybe 10-15K diabetes insipidus sufferers worldwide. There are alternative ways potentially that such research and manufacturing efforts could be organized, and maybe if everything falls apart and we have to start anew they would be, but I'm not so sure.Behavior is a different matter.I think few would argue that as things stand today if a person goes on a shooting spree, they will be punished in some way. We can debate the effectiveness of that as a deterrent, but there are laws and they are enforced, even if very irregularly depending on the color of your skin, which way your genitalia are arranged and how much money you have.

@stripey Oh I totally agree. Some flavor of European style socialism - "Put Capitalism in a constrained box" makes EVERY bit of sense to me.It's like, sure, let's use greed to motivate behavior, but put boundaries around what's acceptable and ACTUALLY ENFORCE THEM without exception.Treat the sick. House the unhoused. Feed the hungry for fuck's sake. There's NO reason not to do those things in a society as rich as ours here in America. Now pardon me while I stuff a rag in the mouths of every nearby conservative whining "BUT THEY'RE ALL GOING BROKE!" as loud as they can :)

@textfiles That's great to hear! I will see if I can dig those up.I was so excited a couple years back when the 'deluxe' CD edition of _In Visible Silence_ came out and I could FINALLY add a non Max Headroom version of _Paranoimia_ to my library I nearly plotzed :)

@textfiles Whoa the CD for that is $161!! Thankfully the track is in a bunch of streaming places and the bastards haven't yet found a way to keep me from retaining the bits once they've been streamed to my machine :) Thanks for the pointer! AON is an all time favorite!

So TiL something important about runjning a downstream Github fork.If you're NOT looking to be able to contribute your changes back upstream, pull your changes down with `git merge upstream` rather than `git pull --rebase upstream origin`.I was doing the latter and having a HELL of a time with conflicts re-appearing rebase after rebase. If you're looking to contribute changes back upstream, you shouldn't have this problem anyway since your fork should be short lived and only encompass a single change.#git #floss #github #fork

@textfiles What stinks about this situation is that most people won't know they've been hurt until a few years from now when they go to find a thing, or several things, and it's just .... GONE.Those of us who were around for the internet's early days have this happen to us more often than most, I suspect.

OK so one tiny #tmux quibble. It seems like it's easy to fool into thinking a different process is running in your window than actually is.Like, if you run a command that spawns a subshell, it will take the process name of that subshell's parent. So, for instance, if I run `poetry shell` to spawn a subshell that has all my Python virtual environments set up so #neovim will see them, it still says 'Python' even when what's actually running in that pane in Neovim.Hardly the end of the world, but it does make labeling windows per-process less useful.

#gamedev question - How come video games seem to favor sad emotional endings?I know there are exceptions like Bioshock where you can alter the ending depending on your actions, but I feel like I've seen way more sad endings than not.(Why yes I just finished _Firewatch_, more details on that later :)

So TiL that @SDF actually hosts a public access TWENEX system!!!That is incredibly cool. It's not easy to host shared classic computing environments for people.
