@futurebird I never saw them until I moved to the Midwest for college, but theyâre kind of amazing! I tried to describe them to someone from back home and could only think of the phrase Iâd seen on computer game loading screens: âreticulating splinesâ. Thatâs what they look like.

Every time I read that another tech CEO wants to make his company into an Everything App with passport-rigorous real-world ID of users, I think of how much I hate it when people try to send me actual important communication via Facebook messenger. Every tech CEO thinks he's going to be dictator of his own little corporate state, but really we're just all going to be more isolated because all our family members chose (or got hired by) different walled gardens and never just send an email.

I may actually have seen my first red-shouldered hawk! I jumped the gun and posted on here that I thought I had once, but decided it was two red-tails and Merlin SoundID mistaking a northern flicker.But this bird (pardon the terrible quality: my most silhouetted photos of the day, so I've had to blast them to bring up the plumage at all) really makes a more plausible California red-shouldered than a red-tailed! @futurebird Iâve been reading them too! I read a few when I was a teen but figured âenh, I guess Iâm a Douglas Adams personâ. Iâm really enjoying them now, despite some winceworthy moments (especially in an orientalist vein). I have been using a complex reading order so I can deal with my libraryâs long hold times/gaps in availability on the excellent audiobooks. I love the witches ones (both the text and narration) and Iâm putting off reading the last one of those so I wonât run out.

@futurebird I grew up and live in a state with a small black population* (Oregon) and have never heard âambalanceâ in the wild that I can recall, so, anecdotally?*(I swear I am used to hearing Oregon called the whitest state in the union but playing with the Wikipedia data table, it looks like we arenât even the least % black (#10) and we are #22 for percentage white. So I guess there are lies, damn lies, and vibestistics?)

Random #recommendation! If you are at all a fan of the sort of Iago narrative where the main character is dastardly but you want to see what he does and whether he succeeds, you may like 1968 quirky small-town crime thriller Pretty Poison, starring Anthony Perkins and the incomparable Tuesday Weld. She is fantastic in it! I recommend going in COMPLETELY UNSPOILED! Really. Content notes: some ungory violence, suspense; and a creepy age-gap (25 year-old Weld plays a 17-year-old girl.)#movies
