I love the clear skies in winter. We've been super lucky this year, and have gotten out to enjoy the scenery even though there's no sun to go with it.Here's a few scenes from the next fjord around from us.#EwenInNorway #Lumix #Photography #Norway

It's 2am here. Still buzzing from being out for 4 hours with the nordlys. I found a quiet hill-top with a wide open sky, and watched tonight's aurora show ebb and flow. I feel so small beneath the painted sky. It's humbling and beautiful in equal measure. My cameras were on time-lapse the entire night. One just pointed straight up, the other on the move with me to chase moments.Night like this are nights I wish everyone could experience. Watching the dance between the solar winds and our planet. It's like science making art.#EwenInNorway #Lumix #Photography #Norway #Aurora #Nordlys

Feels a little bit like we've stepped into a 1980s thriller and the murder is about to take place! But it's actually our hotel room. There's been a little diversion in our schedule.

It turns out that every Saturday there's a flight from our little corner of the Arctic direct to Zurich. It was less than €100 to fly from one end of Europe to the other. We only had to drive 45mins from our house to our nearest airport, parked 200m from the terminal (it's a tiny little airport) and the plane was half empty.Shellie was so excited on the flight. Potato salad and yummy warm bread for a snack. Then a pfeffernuese cookie later in the flight. She's feeling very very Swiss. Haven't seen her smile like this since her wedding day! She's worked so hard these past six months. I literally can't tell you how hard. But she has. And all of a sudden she's got a few days to stop working and just eat chocolate! We arrived late at night. Took a tram to the hotel, very civilised. Got to the supermarket before it closed and our minds almost exploded. So much yummy cheese and bread and speck. We ate dinner in our hotel room, from our shopping spree. We're just so friggin lucky. We had planned to be here for a work thing, but then that got cancelled and now we're having a long weekend to indulge in full cream milk and all the cheeses!

Remembering that TV series called "lifestyles of the rich and famous" and I want a more honest version that shows all the exploration and oppression caused by these awful specimens.

I probably should be back out there taking more photos, but I came home for a bit to get warm and have a hot meal. And part of me wants to head to bed, and part of me wants to sit out in the cold and hope to see a few more of these. The beauty of the movement, the shapes, the colours and the transience is something I will never be able to fully grasp. But I keep trying.#EwenInNorway #Photography #Auroras #Nordlys #Jan20 #AuroraStorm #Aurora

Was chatting to a friend today about the importance of having art in our lives. To focus our minds on creating art and expressing that aspect of ourselves. Art is like nature, we need to "touch grass" on a regular basis, and we need to "hold the brush" just as often. Here's one of my favourite moments from last night. It's shot with a 10mm fisheye, so it's more than 180° of view from top to bottom. That burst of corona above the fjord is directly above my head, and then continues behind me to the south. The 10mm sees all of this.I must take care to keep my head out of the shot in such moments :)#EwenInNorway #Photography #Nordlys #Jan20 #AuroraStorm #Aurora

Okey one more. This time my regular 14mm perspective, looking straight up at a corona. I picked this one from the same time of night, to match the other two 10mm shots in this thread.I am struggling with editing these, because the colours are so intense. It looks un-natural, as though they are doctored. Yet I've backed off the saturation by double my usual amount. It really is an intense display when the big ones zip over head. What colours are real? The camera is seeing a lot more colour than our eyes do. We did see the red and greens in the night, for sure. At times the sky was like daylight, but green and red. If you tinker with white-balance you can push those reds into purple, and the brighter greens into yellow hues. Reality is anything you want it to be on a night like this.#EwenInNorway #Photography #Nordlys #Jan20 #AuroraStorm #Aurora

Sharing another example of my editing here. Or perhaps a glance at the potential of editing. My preference for most photos is to push for a light and bright result. Not so much to make night look like day, that's going too far, but to avoid the heavy weight of dark blacks and heavy contrast. I like things soft, and recognise not everyone digs this approach. I want my aurora shots to sit next to my other work and feel balanced. In this instance, the RAW file was a bit underexposed, which is probably ideal for many folks I think. Lots of people tend to like the strong blacks and rich colours. The second edit in this example is perhaps closer to where most folks might head. Still not strongly saturated beyond the defaults (which are pretty intense for my tastes). The final two in the quad have been tweaked for colour balance and saturation. Just wanting to demonstrate how much "personal taste" can influence the final colours you see in an aurora image posted online. I get a little cranky about hyper-saturated auroras. A lot of folks are excited to see their first aurora and get a little disappointed when it didn't look the same to their eyes as it did the photoshop saturation slider!#EwenInNorway #Photography #Nordlys #Jan20 #AuroraStorm #Aurora

The natural world around me often gives me cause to stop. So many kinds of beautiful. A path in the woods, lined by frosted birch. The sound of ice crystals under foot. I look a little closer to discover a tiny world full of grand moments.#EwenInNorway #Photography #NiceIce #Lumix

Snow day today. Mostly inside editing stuff from the last few days. Kind of glad to get a rest to be honest. Looks like a good chance of clear skies for auroras tomorrow night. Here's a couple of moments out on the edge of a frozen lake a few days back, just as the sun was making its brief visit. Cool but warm.#EwenInNorway #Photography #Norway #Lumix #WorkshopWithEwen

@Karolina OMG you know it. For a brief moment in history I felt okay about being middle-aged divorced and fat. Some of those episodes were really something. Like when we lied about crashing the motorcycle. Or the conversation about dating a fat girl. Or that amazing storyline with his mum. And that episode with Parker Posey.I don't know why he had to be this way. Success doesn't seem to make some people better.

@Karolina It's soooooo nice to know that someone else feels that. I was having a terrible time in my life when that TV show came out, and it really had its moments.Ohhhh, I just remembered the episode with Robin Williams. So poignant in hindsight. And the Joan Rivers one. She had a great line about humility when you are successful. She said you have to learn people's names on the way up, because you might need those people on the way down.
