@wauz American cities are weird, no central plaza, not much history (comparatively speaking). Even the cathedrals are often off on a hill away from downtown (in Denver and Saint Paul, at least.) Sky scrapers are indicative of downtowns at least in big cities in the US.

Someone wrote a book on electric boats ... in 1894! Batteries are heavy and expensive for boats even today and all electric boats are not very common. One solution to the battery problem, as it happens, is to turn your canal boat into a canal electric trolley boat. From 'Electrical Boats and Navigation' by Martin and Sachs. NY:CC Shelley Publisher, 1894.

Spouse's trike seat is broken. Had to take it off to bring to the shop. Hopefully they can weld it?? She's riding my trike and I'm on the backup bike till we get it fixed.

Our electric assist kits for our trikes are stuck on one of those ships that can't make it to port. Might not get the parts till January? We ordered them in July. Welcome to supply chain snaffu #6,789,888,564, please take a number, keep your mask on and find something pleasant to read.

Oh, good news! I talked to a mechanic in the same shop and apparently he has, like, a personal stash of used electric bike motors. We said that'd be better than waiting months for a new product that is still on a ship somewhere. He picked up Spouse's trike today and I gave him the deposit. Yikes, it's a bit much! But you know, for two e-assist upgrades for our trikes, it's not bad. We'd pay that much for a single scooter. Besides, we knew this what we wanted and we saved up for it. :bancars:

We moved in months ago and we're still getting settled in. But at least we know where to grocery shop and stuff and while I don't have all my craft stuff or books really organized, I can get to the supplies and sewing machine. Yes, dogs need friends, too. :)

My therapist has been talking about this for weeks, but the CDC has put depression on the list of 'at risk' conditions for covid. People with anxiety, depression, bi-polar, schizophrenia, PTSD and other mental health condition are also at risk. It has to do with how chronic stress and inflammation can lead to worse outcomes if you do get covid. This is getting more mainstream press now. Stay safe friends! https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/22783685/covid-19-depression-mental-health-risks-immunology

Doing research for DIY shoes and ran across these bronze age beauties. Look on pg 12 of the article for more detail. Lime bast is the same as the inner bark of linden trees, which are common in Minnesota and are used by local Ojibwa and Dakota peoples for all kinds of useful projects. https://richlyadorned.files.wordpress.com/2017/04/annecatalogenglish-cdr.pdf

I read this article this morning and I'm still thinking about it. I'm tired of these feel good, consume less why bother with structural change pieces. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/mar/07/six-key-lifestyle-changes-can-help-avert-the-climate-crisis-study-findsIf you're poor, even if you live in a Capitalist State, you aren't flying, probably don't have a car, might be food insecure and all you can afford is cheap carbs and not enough fruits and veg. You aren't buying new clothes or new phones anyway.

Like I'm over here sewing my own clothes, researching how to grow potatoes and microgreens, and I've been car free for 20 years and I'm disabled and over 50.

What do people consider 'forever' file formats. I.E file types that are open source and won't become obsolete quickly and can run on minimalist computers. I know that lots of people consider txt's to be pretty good for everything plain text, but what about odt and odf for word processing and spread sheets? Is ogg, flac or acc better than mp3 for music and audiobooks? Giff for images? I'm a sci-fi writer and want to know what 'old tech' might still be useful in the future. Thanks Mastodon!

Great ideas all! I'm writing a near-future (Climate Apocalypse) scene where a group of techies are trying to get a council of Grandmothers (whose job it is to look to the Seventh Generation - 250 years), to sign off on the neo-tribes building their own wrist-decks with the specs of a Commodore-64, 8-bit type machine. (I've heard of people building 8-bit chips in their DIY garage labs IRL) There is high tech in-world, but not likely to last past another supply chain break, post peak oil.
