Okay since I’m posting, here’s a few more shots of the garden and artwork. I participated in an open garden tour as part of the Northwest Perennial Association last month. The larger ceramic pieces here are almost all sculpted by me; the tiny ones on the shelves are all painted & glazed by my kiddo at the DIY ceramics shop. #garden#gardening#GardeningMastodon#InMyGarden#PNW#PortfolioDay #contemporaryart #artistsonmastodon#sculpture#woodworking

@IdahoLark Well the thru trail goes 31 miles right down the river valley to Stehekin, a curious little town on Lake Chelan (East slope of the Cascades) that is only accessible by boat. I took another fork off to the North and that goes up to Sahele Peak (8400 ft I think) but the trail stops at the glacier at about 7000.

@TraRay I’ve eaten this fruit in Ecuador. It’s called something else there-naranji or naranjilla or something. I don’t know how to describe the taste. Solanum quitoense is the botanical name and it seems to be related to the tomato.

@lproven @Reuters There are concrete, achievable steps you can take right now to slow the insect apocalypse. Leave your autumn leaves in place. Or rake them aside beneath a garden hedge, don’t trash them. Don’t cut your flowers down, but leave the dead plants standing till spring. Insects— nearly all beneficial—use this habitat as shelter. Reduce your lawn in favor of diverse perennial plant species. Stop using pesticide sprays. #gardening #GardeningMastodon #insects #biodiversity

My staycation continues with a hike to Hannegan pass. Just North of Washington's second highest volcano, Mt Baker or Komo Kulshan, it sits on the boundary of North Cascades National Park, and one of the remotest areas in the Continental US. The view from Hannegan peak should be sublime. As always, a botanically rich thread. 1/5#hiking #hikingadventures #nativeplants #PNW #pnwonderland #getoutside

Hannegan pass hike cont'd. Hannegan pass lies at the back of a long valley dominated by Mount Sefried on the South. The trail passes through subalpine meadows with wildflowers galore. Photos 2 & 3: I've never seen Maianthemum racemosum (plumed Solomon's seal, false Solomon's seal) this big or tropical looking. It's like Hawaiian ginger. Photo 4: yellow violet (Viola glabella) also in abundance. 2/5 #hiking #hikingadventures #nativeplants #PNW #pnwonderland #getoutside

Hannegan pass hike cont'd. More meadow plants. Photos 1 & 2: scarlet paintbrush (Castilleja coccinea) isn't plentiful here, sadly; it's my favorite. Photo 3: one of our native sedums on a boulder, look at that exquisite texture. Photo 4: you know you're in old growth when you see this creeping raspberry, Rubus pedatus. Loves mossy shade under old trees; in big patches like this it makes the most perfect carpet. 3/5 #hiking #hikingadventures #nativeplants #PNW #pnwonderland #getoutside

Hannegan pass hike cont'd. Photo 1: climbing higher up the valley now, I'm almost to the pass that separates this valley from the next. Photo 2: I'm passing corn lilies (Veratrum viride) that have only sprouted a few weeks ago, with the snow melt. Photo 3 & 4: and here are the glacier lilies! Never seen so many in one place. So called, I'm guessing, because they appear near snow and ice melt. 4/5 #hiking #hikingadventures #nativeplants #PNW #pnwonderland #getoutside

Hannegan pass hike cont'd. From the pass, a path leads up Hannegan Peak, which at about 6000 ft isn't nearly as tall as its neighbors but affords an incredible panorama of the North Cascades. That's Mt Shuksan in the distance with its spike tip and glaciers. The final stretch was still largely snow covered, but with some patience, hiking poles, and micro spikes I made it to the top. Photos here don't do it justice. 5/5 #hiking #hikingadventures #nativeplants #PNW #pnwonderland #getoutside

The other day I took a day off and visited Heliotrope Ridge, one of the most popular routes up Mt Baker/Komo Kulshan in the far Northwestern corner of Washington. At just under 11,000 feet, it's smaller and less well known than Mt Rainier but just as well supplied with glaciers and wildflower meadows--and much less crowded. As usual, a botanically rich thread follows. 1/8#hiking #hikingadventures #nativeplants #PNW #outdoor #getoutside

Hiking Heliotrope ridge part 2. Being a popular trail, Heliotrope Ridge is pretty well worn and this tree has had its share of people popping through its hole. Some places have plank bridges-- the treads here are split from nearby logs rather than sawn, which gives them this charming wavy look. It also makes them more durable and lends them an almost musical sound when walked on. 2/8 #hiking #hikingadventures #nativeplants #PNW #outdoor #getoutside

Hiking Heliotrope ridge part 3. Mt.Baker is an active(ish) volcano that last noticeably erupted in the 1850s. It's covered with a number of glaciers, and some descend far enough to be reachable on foot without ropes or technical skill. In summer they melt in torrents of water that just gush off the mountain. I had to ford this one, it's about knee deep but swift enough to sweep a person off their feet if you're not careful.3/8 #hiking #hikingadventures #nativeplants #PNW #outdoor #getoutside

Hiking Heliotrope ridge part 5. We're right at the tree line here and the meadows are filled with wildflowers. Indian thistle (Cirsium edule) in the foreground with pearly everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea) and fireweed (Chamaenerion angustifium). Another swathe of pearly everlasting, and a purple lupine flower attended by a bumblebee. 5/8 #hiking #hikingadventures #nativeplants #PNW #outdoor #getoutside

Hiking Heliotrope ridge part 6. So glad I got to see these in bloom: Lewis' monkey flower (Mimulus/Erythranthe Lewisii) named after Merriweather Lewis. One of our showiest native wildflowers. Also more fireweed with yellow ragwort (Senecio triangularis). 6/8 #hiking #hikingadventures #nativeplants #PNW #outdoor #getoutside

@internetarchive in the late 90s and early 2000's I was making a lot of online interactive art, all developed with Flash. For me it was the gateway drug to a whole career as a UX designer. It was a fantastic integrated design/development environment that allowed for really artisanal experiences to be created by a single individual. I've never seen its like since. Between the deprecation of the plugin and OS changes making local exe's obsolete, all my early work is unfortunately lost now.
