@stux I like money though - could a community eventually be run like Alaska and have a portion of the revenue from natural resource extraction go back to the local population?

@stux I think go for it. The more people test this concept and the guard rails, the more we learn and better it gets for all.

If you're addicted to Twitter and wanting to join more general/centralized servers - you're out of luck. The top 3 servers have closed their registration:https://mastodon.socialhttps://mastodon.onlinehttps://mstdn.socialYou have to go find and contribute to a Mastodon server with either a niche audience or much smaller audience.Side-effect is that this creates scarcity around the above user handles, making them socially, extremely desirable.e.g. @user #rant #mastodon #ux

Instead, if you want to participate in these larger audiences, you have to deal with this trash. The user journey is something like: Browse on a larger server ➡️ Click favorite/like a post ➡️ Copy URL from popup ➡️ Open or switch to your Mastodon server tab in your browser ➡️ Paste the URL into the search bar ➡️ Wait for around 1-2 seconds for it to load ➡️ Click favorite/like again ➡️ Return to other Mastodon server tabYou're lying if you think this is acceptable#rant #mastodon #ux #ui

My understanding of federation was that you could start a server and federate with other servers. This is not the case though. You can only federate with individual users.I assume there is a technical limitation for server to server federation and we just need to invest heavily into dealing with these terrible UX patterns until you reach a return on investment in your own feed/server. At least until you reach what we may have had on Twitter. There is a dirty workaround however...#rant #ux

Introducing #fediverse directories!Specifically, I want to focus on Trunk because it looks like it tries to solve this very problem.https://communitywiki.org/trunkThe concept is simple. Trunk allows you to mass follow people. You can also apply for a spot on these lists. You still have to pick and choose your topics you want to follow which isn't the worst thing. The problem is, you're not getting any crossover from topics unless you seek it outside your own content bubble.#rant #ux

Remind you of anything from before idk 2010?The sites pictured below were some of the more popular ones - but there was a dark side of this too. Pay for rank sites were EVERYWHERE. SEO was centered around link backs once upon a time and smart people exploited this to the max with their directory sites. These directory sites eventually found they could charge for top spots on their sites and whoever had the most marketing spend could wins the most market share.#rant #ux #mastodon

The directory thing is not bad necessarily - but inconvenient to the average user. Tech startups recognized this and QUICKLY started consolidating these directories.Startups started doing this and then would be bought or combined to increase market share that amplified their reach and value.Fast forward many years and you have Twitter/Facebook Marketplace/etc.I don't see how Mastodon prevents against this or why the internet would go backwards on convenience by a lot.#rant #ux #mastodon

I'll #rant about more #ux issues with Mastodon soon, but I'll leave this here with a request to please prove these issues as non-issues. I want to read the arguments!Additionally I'll share my top 3 improvements:1️⃣ Allow server to server federation instead of user to server.2️⃣ Develop cross server sign-in to avoid the trash "copy and paste in your search bar to interact with a server" garbage.3️⃣ Implement an on platform explore that crosses servers.#rant #mastodon #ux

For those looking for the hottest servers to explore - I like these:https://mastodon.social - Where Twitter users want to migrate to. Also the official server by the creators of #Mastodon.https://mastodon.online - Another generic and largely populated server.https://mastodon.lol - friendly towards anti-fascists, members of the LGBTQ+ community, hackers, and the like. https://mstdn.social - Another general serverhttps://fosstodon.org/about - Open-source tech#newhere
