TIL In the early days of the U.S. space program, NASA didn't offer astronauts life insurance for in-flight missions, and private life insurance was extremely expensive. To get around this, the crew of the Apollo 11 mission signed hundreds of autographs for their families to sell if they died. If the mission went wrong, NASA planned to cut communication with the astronauts and let them either suffocate or take their own lives. https://bigthink.com/the-past/apollo-11-plan-b/

Many American children learn that Daylight Saving Time was originally intended to give farmers an extra hour of light to work the fields. That is, in fact, a lie. https://qz.com/1120488/daylight-saving-time-as-americans-know-it-was-instituted-by-corporate-lobbies-not-farmers

@grammargirl Oh, Siri can do more cool and useful things. When it first came out I reviewed _Talking to Siri: Learning the Language of Apple's Intelligent Assistant_, and one thing I learned how to do is say, "Siri, when I get home remind me to put out the trash [or Call Brad]." It knows what spot you have marked as Home, for instance, so it pops up with a reminder or suggests the phone call. I don't use that feature often, but golly it's handy when I do.

You probably saw the news that astronaut Bill Anders died. I didn't realize for a few days that it was in a plane accident. That is: He was 90 years old and doing a stunt loop in his airplane when it crashed. Damn. More power to him for living life to his fullest. All honor to you, sir. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cw99wj5e5q8o

In Julia Child’s kitchen, “style was subservient to flexible functionality. It was this quality that would be picked up, starting in the late 1970s, by a group of designers who put forward a design philosophy emphasising user-centeredness and accessibility.” https://placesjournal.org/article/julia-childs-kitchens/
