Just move to another server. To start my activity here, it is time to upgrade my plot about the growth of #mastodon. Here is the evolution of the number of new users joining mastodon in the last months. After a massive migration one week ago, it seems the number of daily new users is leveling off to around ~40k. This is 10x more growth than it was before the #twitterMigration. Time to acknowledge the hard work of all server admins that manage a surge of 10x more activity in the #Fediverse.

Almost 180k new users joined #mastodon yesterday, a new record. This third #twitterMigration wave happened after Musk's Twitter 2.0 ultimatum to #Twitter workers. Each wave is stronger than the previous one. Here is my updated plot showing the three consecutive waves.

The number of users by instance in #mastodon is highly unequal. Some servers (mastodon.social) have a significant fraction of the number of users. If the ubiquitous "rich-get-richer" (RGR) phenomenon kicks in, we might end up with a couple of instances having all of the users. But did it kick in? Here is the relationship between instance's size and growth. There is a little bit of RGR, but some of the rapidly-growing instances are small. Decentralization also in how the network grows.

Update on the growth of #mastodon in the last months. After the big wave of new accounts on Nov 17th, the growth seems steady for the last week at around 50k new accounts/users per day. Only in the last couple of weeks, 1M new accounts were added. At this rhythm, #mastodon will get 1.5M accounts/users per month.
