@mmu_man 1) they are not just flat pieces of plastic. 2) the laser cutters at our local "fab lab" are either not working, weak or a pain in the ass to use. 3) I can run and tend to it at home, in between other tasks, no need to leave the house resulting in much less time overhead.

@mmu_man Unfortunately, I am coming to the conclusion that it makes much more sense to have the tools instead of relying on the fab lab. (too many times I went to the fab lab to just find out the tool I need in "currently broken" :( ) I do have a laser cutter purchase on my radar as it is useful for a bunch of other projects. Jigs, attachments, mockups and so on. (I know not everyone has the space for that ... I just wish folks would care for the fab lab tools more... :( )

@mmu_man I already need a workshop for the machines I have. The desktop laser cutters are quite nice these days. This is what I am considering. And would be able to do pretty much everything I need it for, without taking up a huge floor space.

@mmu_man ohh that is fantastic! Walking distance to the fab lab is essentially having a workshop right there. (tracking tools when there is a herd of other people moving them around sounds a bit like a challenge ;) )

@tommythorn @attie @whitequark @charlotte I am glad you like it. It was a bunch of extra work. It is good to hear that it was worth it. This is the first time we have produced an enclosure for any of our products. I can only hope that next time it will be easier. :)

It was a hot minute since I hand assembled prototype hardware. Finally had a chance to give PixelPump by @robin1337 it works well. I think the biggest advantage compared to tweezers is that I can pick parts directly from tape. Much less rotating and table smashing to flip resistors 😅 Are there ceramic needles to avoid static charge? Then it would be pretty much perfect! :) Still I feel that it is an improvement over tweezers. (I hated vacuum placers I tried so far)

Doing some assembly tests today. Yes this is very much not an optimal way to do it. But provides a good way to make sure assembly is going well. Will let the optimizer consider the whole panel if I know that all the placements are right. #electronics #fpga #opensource #manufacturing #pnp #assembly

Considering that Discord is continuing its walk towards "bad”. I once again look for alternatives
IRCv3 can't come early enough. If there was an ircd, bouncer and good desktop&web client supporting these I would probably consider going back to IRC:* reply to (draft): https://ircv3.net/specs/client-tags/react* edit/delete message (draft): https://ircv3.net/specs/extensions/message-redaction (this includes deletion)* react (I guess emoji?) (draft): https://ircv3.net/specs/client-tags/react.html

I am pretty sure markdown support is a client only feature which I would also like to see supported. But I think it could be implemented on existing IRC without big issues... IRCv3 also has stuff to support UTF-8 which seems fundamental at this point.

And before you ask, besides general account security, (which I feel regular IRC already supports well enough) I do not really care for all the fancy encryption for public casual group chats. In a chat with more than a few friends you can't assume privacy anyways

As I was asked a few times. I am not dismissing "new solutions" like Zulip completely. The reason why I hope that IRCv3 might be a good solution is the fact that over 35 years later it is still around and used and developed for by quite a lot of people. It would be great if could settle on a platform and not have to move project chats to the "new shiny thing" every 5-10 years. :/

Funnily enough, the universe decided that today is the day where libera.chat announces they are starting to deploy IRCv3 features over the next two weeks. Together with IRCCloud (that I am already using) it might actually be a solution that is here rather than one that I am "hoping for". Looking forward to trying it all out! :D https://fosstodon.org/@liberachat/116054051568526229
