The only reason the debate is possible is because neither side knows. My concern is a doomsday cult mindset of pinning one's hope on some magical but unlikely outcome fixing humanity's ills.Then again, humanity may have a terminal case of climate change, so perhaps we need a miracle anyway.

The one thing I know is that I know nothing.As I have said, I like to ask questions and put ideas through the ringer to get out all my concerns and criticisms.Deep down, I still doubt that a deus ex machina technological advance will come along to make anarchy and not some other mode of cooperation dominant.But I suppose I should retract my confidence about it not happening- never say never.

Democratization is a powerful thing.A concern I have in technical circles is reinventing the wheel and relearning about the problems society already knows about. Doomed to repeat history. For example, cryptocurrency. It seems like a techno libertarian oasis, but quickly the community re-learns about theft, bank runs, speculation, market manipulation, financial crises, and yearns for old fashioned government regulations.

@simon For example, I'm fiddling around with a board game idea. I can say "generate the React code for a board that looks like this..." and I'm able to copy and paste the code into my editor and it pretty much just works.

You plug the snippet of code in, execute it, and see if it passes your test or not. Chatbots have revolutionized data retrieval for programming languages. A chatbot can surface an esoteric piece of documentation much faster than a developer can find it and present the documentation in a more understandable way, e.g. by presenting a worked example.

@strypey I am a seasoned software engineer. I can look at the solution and decide those things for myself. I can write tests or profile the code to assert its efficiency. I can marvel at, "oh I didn't know about that new language feature." I can ask ChatGPT more general questions about the code, e.g. "what are some architectural tradeoffs about, say, running these tasks in serial vs in parallel."

@futurebird @CptSuperlative @emilymbender I have found a ton of use cases.I asked ChatGPT what to have for dinner and it reminded me of mezze / Mediterranean style food, so that's what I bought at the grocery store and ate.I asked ChatGPT to generate the syntax for a PySpark query and it reminds me of how to do distinct() and the syntax for filter.I asked it how to fix a Linux WiFi issue and it gave me the modprobe command to unload and reload the WiFi module.
