I'm curious, is basic #FinancialLiteracy taught in school? #Budgeting, #Taxes, etc.?I recall in middle school (back in the early 90s being taught how to balance a checkbook.

In high school it would have been beneficial to understand better the basics of how to do taxes, how investing works, what compounding and compound interest means, etc.In college, it should have been a general education requirement to take a more advanced financial literacy course, because, in theory, these students are going to go on to need more complex knowledge of these concepts.

But here I am at 43 years old, realizing that nobody ever taught me about investing. Every time I would start a new job, they'd say, "We have a 401(k)!" And I would think back to when I was a kid and I thought that #401k meant that you'd have $401k when you retired, which would be enough to live off of for the rest of your life.

Our climbing #CreditCard debt problem, the idea that most Americans couldn't afford a $4000 emergency situation without having to go into #debt, and the continued bleak outlook for #SocialSecurity all makes me realize that we should be doing much, MUCH more to prepare our kids and our young adults (and *ahem* some middle-aged adults) about what it means to be truly financially literate, and how it's more than just balancing your damn check book!

Does anyone have experience #selfhosting it (not necessarily locally, but via a DIY hosting solution like #NearlyFreeSpeech)?Alternatively, any recommendations for #microblogging solutions that integrate nicely with the #fediverse? I’ve found #wordpress to be too cumbersome, and I don’t really want to pay subscription costs for micro.blog if there’s a comparable self-hosting alternative.
